Its one of 3 things, bad main board, bad tcon board or bad panel...only way to find out is replace the boards if that doesn't fix it its the panel and the set is done for

Sounds like you have a backlight problem. To verify this, turn on the set, dim the lights in the room, and shine a bright flashlight on the screen. If you see a faint picture you have a backlight fault. It could be as simple as a bad capacitor in the power supply, or a faulty inverter board, or in rare cases a bad backlamp.
Check whether the back light is working or not. The problem sounds to be a back light related. If CCFL lamps have defect or back light inverter board is faulty, this kind of problem can occur. But if this is the problem, there sill be sound output from the TV. Only picture will be out.

Since it is coming back after a union-like break, it is probably the inverter for the fluorescent backlight rather than the light itself; they can flicker and die but normally don't recover after a rest.
The inverter may be a separate board in the unit and you should be able to recognize the right board due to its relationship to the backlight.
This kind of problem will not repair itself but decay further with time.
