The Sigma 70-210 f 1:4,5 is an old model, most likely only to be used in manuals focus mode on your Nikon D5x00 camera.
It also needs to be a Nikon version.
Only the Nikon camera's with the LCD screens on top to the right, like D80, D90, D7x00, D300 and above have a focus motor build in, so old AF lenses can be used in AF modes.

I believe you're hearing the VR in the lens adjusting. Try turning the VR off and see if you hear the sound. If not, then you have a normal operating lens.

Why wont my Nikon af nikkor 70-300mm G lens autofocus its self with my D5000 camera

The D5000 does not have a focus motor in the body, relying on the lens to have one. The old 70-300mm G lens does not have a focus motor, relying on the camera to have one. Thus, this combination will not autofocus.
The newer 70-300mm AF-S G lens, as well as the even newer 70-300mm VR AF-S lens, do have the autofocus motor and thus will autofocus on the D5000.

DOES SIGMA 70-210MM UC MF FIT AND USABLE ON NIKON D5000

Sigma makes lenses for a variety of cameras. If the lens has Nikon mount then it will fit onto the D5000. However, it's a manual focus lens so naturally you won't get autofocus. The lens also lacks the electronics to communicate with the camera, so you will get no help from the camera's exposure meter and you'll have to shoot in Manual exposure mode.

I have been given a 100-300mmF4.5-6.7DL Sigma lens but it will only work in manual focas AF but does work on a friends Nikon is that because my D40X has no AF motor.

That is exactly why the auto-focus (AF) does not work with that lens on this camera. The D40, D40X, D60, D3000, D3100 and D5000 lack an AF motor built into the camera. These cameras will require that the lens have the AF motor to work as expected.

You can review a complete list of lenses (as of 8/2010) that have a built in AF motor here.

Will the Quanta 28-200 for the Nikon n75 work on the Nikon D5000?

Yes and no. I assume the lens is of more or less the same vintage as the N75? If so, the lens will fit onto the D5000. All of the camera's exposure and metering modes will work properly. However the lens lacks an interal focus motor and thus will not autofocus on the D5000. You can focus manually, and the green focus indicator in the viewfinder will continue to work.

Will it work with digital Nikon camera?

Yes, with caveats. First, bear in mind that this lens has been discontinued by the manufacturer. Second, the lens does not have a built-in focus motor and thus will not autofocus on the D40/D40x/D60/D5000/D3000 models. You also won't get 3D Matrix metering on those models. Everything else will work, and all features should work on other models.

Lens works fine in manual focus on Nikon D5000 but won't autofocus.

The D5000 needs an AF-S lens to autofocus.
Nikon have not fitted the mechanical focus drive to the D5000.
