SOURCE: parking brake pedal goes to floor
Hello;
The parking brake cables may be stretched and in need of adjustment. Follow the cables along to a nut. Then you can tighten the adjusters up on both sides until you have the proper tension. Also make certain none of the brackets are bent or broken that the cables ride through.
Thanks;

no the P light ans system will always be on unless you command a drive or N funtion since there is no 'park' in the drive train only a mechanical brake. when running/on, when you put in drive it should acknoledge drive and P should unlock. if not you have trouble and need the dealer
Testimonial: "this was very helpful. Thanks. It finally went into drive after repeated tries. Good to know there is no actual nonmechanical parking brak"

You may want to revisit those rear brakes to make sure the parking brake linkage is hooked up properly. There is usually a spring that needs to go over the parking brake linkage and make sure the cross bar is facing the right direction and holds both the shoes and the parking brake linkage.

No, just back off the adjusters completely before putting on the drums.
