Resetting the Scanner (Clearing all Memories)
To reset the scanner to factory defaults, turn off the scanner. Then, while holding down 2, 9, and HOLD, turn on the scanner. All scanner memory contents are erased.
Resetting the Scanner
If the scanner's display locks up or stops operating properly,
you might need to reset the scanner.
CAUTION: This procedure clears all the information
you have stored in the scanner. Before you reset
the scanner, try turning it off and back on to see if
it begins working properly. Reset the scanner only
when you are sure it is not working properly.
1. Turn off the scanner.
2. While holding down 2, 9, and Hold, turn on the scanner.
It takes about 3 seconds to initialize and CLEAr appears.
I would suggest you get a subscription to "Radio Reference" dot com. You can get a lot of valuable info from their website and even the ability to program your scanner from their service.
I had the same problem with my BCT7, and after a little research, found this memory backup cap as the problem. It is located next to a transformer near where the 12vdc plugs into the circuit board (the cap is only about a 1/4" tall). You can get one cheap from the following dealer:
I had one like that, could not find a replacement for, so i got one out of a junk radio and made it work, as long as it did not touch any thing and cause a short. As long as I got one screw in it was fine..worked great....hope this was helpful...
You didn't provide a model number, so this response is a little generic and applies mainly to late model Bearcats. To release an individual programmed channel from lockout, stop the scanner on that channel (select and press MANUAL) then press the Lockout (L/O) key. Any unprogrammed channel, displaying 000.0000, will show as locked out. Programming a frequency into it automatically releases the lockout. If all channels are showing as locked out you may need to reset the scanner. The reset procedure varies my model, so I'll need the model number to describe the steps.
The BCT-7 covers popular frequency bands, skipping things like television signals, non-voice (data) bands, and banned (cellular) bands. It cannot be modified to receive other frequencies. Need the manual for your scanner? You can download/print it here:
