What is the function of the ignition switch in a 1987 Ford Ranger 2.9.Tested wires under column. Had no power to some that should have been hot and truck still started? What is up with that?

Have just replaced that switch again along with the lock cylinder. Have not checked wires again yet but, now my starter is getting extremely hot after 5 or 6 starts and than malfunctioning! Starter is brand new!

If everything is turning on, and there's power... check for 12V at the alternator. it may be out now.... or a connector came loose, or wire broke.

SOURCE: 1987 bronco will not start

Ford used alot of fuseable links, mostly around starter selenoid, look around for them and everyone you find try pulling them apart if there bad or burnt they will pull apart and there is your problem. If you don't find one burnt, than its got to be in the wire comming from the switch, heck there might be one of them fuseable links in that wire too.I never had to go that far to find a burnt one it was always around the selenoid or starter.

SOURCE: Ford f250 Truck 1987 460. Solenoid sticks once in

Most likely you need a new Ignition switch. The small "tickler" wires on your solenoid are staying on. You can disconnect the small wire from the Solenoid and then put a test light on it. Turn the Ignition to Start and see if the wire stays hot when you release the key.

Another problem you could have is the Starter has such a bad intermittent short in it, that it keeps the points welded together after the key is released from the Start position. You can get a starter Draw test done at some parts stores like Autozone or Oreillys to name a few, they do it free and on the truck.

Let me know the result please,

DOES THE VEHICLE MAKE ANY NOISE AT ALL WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED?, IF YOU GET A "CLICK" BUT NOTHING ELSE THEN THE STARTER IS JAMMED, GET A HAMMER & GIVE THE STARTER A FEW SOLID FIRM BUT NOT OVER ZEALOUS WHACKS, MAKE SURE THE BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED & TURN THE KEY, IF ITS ANYTHING LIKE ALL THE CARS I'VE HAD OVER THE YEARS IT WILL MAGICALLY SPRING TO LIFE - IF IN DOUBT - GIVE IT A CLOUT!!

SOURCE: fuse# 24 blows on 95 ford ranger every time turn ignition switch

There is a starter relay in the circuit in addition to the starter solenoid.
If you have replaced the components, I would guess the problem is in the harness or a connector.

87 Ford Ranger 2.9. On solenoid there is small terminal w/ push on connection. Is that the same wire that is considered ignition wire under steering column? Only hot when key is in start position

The wire on your solenoid is what we would call the exciter wire. Ford Ranger either Orange or Tan, and yes it is tied into the same wiring as in your column. If you have power at the column and no power at the solenoid, then there is a break in the circuit. A push button is normaly installed by those not being able to track down the break, or those to lazy. admittedly it can be a task, but worth it if you want to keep original.

Need to know how to remove and replace my f 150 ingention it is a 1987 and what tools i will need

The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible. On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.
The ignition switch is operated by the key switch. Courtesy of Ford Motor Company.
To replace the switch:
  • Remove the ignition switch wiring harness.
  • Unbolt it from its position.
  • Bolt the new switch into position.
  • Attach the witing harness.

Where is the multi-function switch on a 1987 ford

the multifunction switch is the same thing as the turn signal switch on the steering column, it does more than just operate the turns so hence the name MULTIFUNCTION.

Ford Ranger will not start

Does the car click when you turn the ignition? If it does, it is probably your starter. If the engine does not turn when you turn the ignition.

1987 Ford Ranger. Won't fire.

Ignition module comes to mind. If you've tested for spark (holding spark plug wire near the block when cranking) and the cap and rotor are good, it seems the module is the only other area left to try. Best of luck Patrick. Please post back with any other questions.
