Try to locate a plug in voltmeter that also measures frequency. set engine speed for 60 hz with moderate load.

SOURCE: I have a Generac portable generator 5000 watts, won't start!

I am assuming the generator worked fine before the oil change. Now that you have done the oil change the genset does not start. These generators have a safety switch, which is basically an oil pressure switch that keeps the engine from running when there is not enough oil in the engine. Make sure that there is enough oil and if there is, look for a wire that runs along side of the engine to a round component. disconnect that wire and try starting. If it does not start then try to ground out the wire to the engine block. If this does not work, then there is other engine problems.

SOURCE: Coleman 5000 watt generator Tecumseh 10 hp engine.

it's running lean.....try resetting the choke partially when it begins to surge.....not completely closed, but enough to richen the fuel mixture (that's all a choke does btw..)
if that helps or clears the problem, your carb is outta whack.....cheaper to buy a new carb than keep taking back into the shop.

SOURCE: Briggs and stratton 8000 watts

Voltage is adjusted by increasing rpm of engine. Use meter with Hz setting and try to adjust to 60 cycles and check voltage to be at about 115-120. If engine is turning 3600rpm/60 cycles and voltage is very low, then problem is most likely with brushes/ commutator rings, or voltage regulator. Some voltage regulators have an adjustment screw to bring voltage up/down (adjust to proper rpm/cycles first). Good luck

SOURCE: I have a Briggs and Stratton 5500 watt Generator

Hello, I would not advise you to adjust the speed without a frequency meter. for 220 volt operation, you will have to use the twist - lock receptacles and not use the neutral in the receptacle. This means one of the generator's hot leads is going to be the neutral in your system. The frame of the generator may be connected to the neutral of the generator, so be careful so that you do not receive an electrical shock. The voltage is adjusted within the receptacle box. There might be a small hole on the right side of the receptacle box that you can insert a small blade screwdriver into to make the voltage adjustment. You do not need to change this much to change the voltage. Now, the frequency is adjusted by a self-locking nut located under the air cleaner right side, when facing the engine. There is a spring on this nut / bolt assembly. I think it is a 5/16 nutdriver or socket that you need for this. Turn counter clockwise 1/8 of a turn. This will slow down the generator to about 50 - 55 hz. This is okay if you are running at around 52 hz. As the generator loads, the rpm will drop down. A frequency meter would be great to use here, as a too low rpm could burn out electrical motors and other equipment that you are using. I have a Briggs & Stratton model 19E412 type 1131-E1 that will not start with starting fluid. It's getting spark to the plug, changed fuel filter and lines but will not start?

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to a Briggs Generator category.

Engines only need 3 things to run.

Compression
A spark and the right time
Fuel

When you try and start, remove the plug and see if it is wet with gas? You may have a blocked carb jet.

Check compression.

Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton 6200 Watt Portable Generator voltage adjust

Usually the cause of slightly low voltage like this is that the engine is not running at full operating RPM. Find the high speed adjusting screw on the govenor linkage and adjust the engine RPM until the output is 220V - 240V

How to adjust carburetor--no screws

Joe,I found a parts schematic that shows the carburetor that includes an idle adjustment screw (part 95A). I know it'[s not the same a the two air/fuel mixture adjustment screws but this may be all you need to fix your problem. Start the engine, turn the screw clockwise until the engine begins to stall then give the screw a 1/2 counterclockwise turn or until the engine settles into a smooth idle. http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/29jnuDU.VFzXFix2.pdf

Hope this helps, Danno

How to fix an off and on switch on a briggs and straton model series, 19e400 5000 watt, on and off switch located on top of the motor. is there a wire thats supposed to hook onto the switch somehow.

Kill switch should have a wire connected to the tab on the spark coil under fan cover. The switch is a means of shorting kill wire to ground. On some generators, there will be another method of shutting down the engine. Usually on/off switch will be more visable on the control panel. Most likely the switch on fan cover was not connected to prevent confusion.

My neighbor gave me a 10 year old 5000 watt Coleman with a 10hp Briggs that was not running. It would run on starter fluid so I focused on a fuel problem. New fuel, fuel filter and oil. Dissassembled the...

That's interesting that you bypassed the fuel pump after noticing that the carburetor was below the tank, not needing a fuel pump to start the engine.

Maybe they put a fuel pump in to ensure that the float bowl valve is not the only thing preventing gas from overflowing into the carburetor when stored for a long period of time.

I would put the pump in if that's the way they originally designed the fuel supply for the engine, just to be safe.

Good luck on this repair.

This is really not something you can do. There is a fair bit of engineering that would have to be done and then there is wiring and mounting, etc.
