Is a 20w 1k Ohm to large a resistor to use

  • Vernon Taylor Aug 29, 2018

Your question was about capacitors, where did the resistor come from? Resistor values and ratings are very important. Faulty resistors should be changed like-for-like. If you want to use any other type/value the circuit will need redesigning.

If the capacitors need replacing then you won't do better than changing them for suitable capacitors of the same values and a suitable working voltage.

With capacitors the working voltage is the main problem where AC current is or could be present. Buying AC rated capacitors can be problematic and it should be noted there is little or no physical difference between AC rated and DC rated capacitors.
A capacitor rated at 250 volts AC could be replaced by a DC rated capacitor that exceeds the RMS value of the AC voltage. The RMS value of 250 volts AC is in the region of 325 volts and so any rating above that would serve, typically 375 - 450 volts. Given the choice if the physical size will fit I would always opt for the higher rating...

You MUST use X2 rated capacitors, as these are designed to be safe on 230/240V AC mains.

You need to contact an electronic component supplier, there are many on line, they can answer that question for you.

The 0.1 microfarad can be safely replaced with a 275 VAC 0.1mF mains capacitor. You can remove the clip that held the old electrolytic capacitor by sliding the old capacitor out and squeeezing the metal clip so that it disengages with the plastic base. The load resistor is 450 Ohm 15W or 20W wirewound. There is a 56 ohm resistor in series with the capacitor which helps smooth the speed change and reduces wear on the contacts. A 2W wirewound resistor works best. (It is worth removing the contacts and removing any pitting or carbon build up with fime emery paper). I have repaired about 20 speed controls sucessfully with these components.
