I presume a TV is involved. Have you looked at the manuals? We can't assume you have. Nor can we assess how you have things connected.
Audio and video can be carried on separate media (wires). Your Marantz requires some setup to assign audio sources to specific inputs. It's in the manual.
I would advise sourcing the TV-related audio directly from the (probable) Cable Box to the Marantz.
First of all if you have not made any connection changes in the system prior to loosing the sound try these steps. Go into the system menu and in speaker configuration see if somebody has given the rear ( surround ) speakers as none. If not just exchange the front and back speakers to confirm if its a speaker failure . If not you will need professional help to fix a damaged surround amplifier.
Looking to buy new receiver so far only have two that appear to be good value for money and within my budget. They are Marantz NR1501 and Denon 1909. also looking at the Quintet 5-channel Klipsch speakers. This is about as far as I have got but will continue to check out the reviews a little longer before making my final decision.
Hi, first of all did you verify with the manual if it is possible to run a testsignal through all 5 channels? One of the most common problems in this case is the basic settings of the device. If you don't have the manual, mostly you can download them from manufacturers website. Chances are that for some reason the setting is set 3.0 stereo (also known as 3channel sound) which is always the 2 fronts and the centre speaker.
Best thing to do it is take a DVD with THX on it and run the THX setup, it will send test signal to all channels.
I think it may be related to set up of crossover frequencies within 'menu'. There's a menu where speaker sizes are set, as far as I remember the lowest setting suggested crossower freq for sub somewhere at 80hz as default which may be too high of you have sub.
