Hello! We just purchaesed a Brother FAX 2840. Set up was no issue at all, sending out faxes with ease. Sadly it wont receive any unless I pick up the handset and press start.

I have called Tech support and they state its in the phone line as to why it wont pick up automatically. Called phone company and they state the line is fine. Any way to get this machine to answer that fax automatically?

SOURCE: fax mach wont receive from other faxes

I'm sorry....Do I have this right? You say that another fax machine was hooked up on the same phone line and you have the same problem with that one. So the problem is related to that phone jack?
It sounds to me like there must be just the slightest amount of interference in the jack, interfering with the fax. They are far more sensitive than just a telephone. You could try a phone line filter.

We have the Brother Intellifax 4100E. It was working fine up until last week. Then it started not receiving faxes. We can copy, and send faxes, and receive the confirmation. I have checked the mode button...

Try calling the fax machine from your mobile and see if it picks up or if anything shows up on the screen of the fax machine. Is it possible that you have plugged the fax machine into the wrong telephone line? Try sending a fax to your mobile phone and see that the number is correct.

Phone hookup

First only plug the line in the LINE socket otherwise it wont receive.

Manual receive will probably be the best as conflict may occur with the answering machine and the fax. You will either not receive faxes or messages. Its a bit of a pain as you will have to be home to receive faxes. eg pick up the handset and press start.

Its the easiest. Unless you want to fiddle with both machines settings to use the fax/telephone mode.

Is Fax set to auto answer or manual?

If you pick up line or press speaker button can you hear other fax sending if so press start and hang up you should receive fax, and you have just proven that machine is in manual receive mode!

I think you will find it  will wake from sleep automaticly if setup correctly.

Setting the voicmail

Voicemail or telephone answering device (TAD). There is a BIG difference. Voicemail is product of your telephone service provider. If you have voicemail, most providers have a solution to this that you must arrange through them. If you have an answering machine, you can set your Brother to TAD mode. In TAD mode, if your answering machine picks up, (you must set your answering machine to answer in less rings than your fax), your fax will "eavesdrop" to listen for the fax tones from the sending machine. If it hears these tones, it will disconnect your answering machine and accept the incoming fax. If it does not hear the tones, it allows the answering machine to record the incoming message. If you are home. If you answer the call and hear a tone every 2.5 to 3 seconds, that signals an incoming fax. Simply touch *51 on the keypad of the phone you picked up on. You will hear some shrill tones. That is your fax machine attempting to receive the incoming fax. Hang up the phone you are on and it will receive the fax. In any case, make sure that the receive mode is NOT set to AUTO. Set the receive mode to TAD or MANUAL. If these instructions were not clear enough, let me know and I will send you DETAILED instructions.
