Most machines take the 130/705 needles. Buy one package (probably universal type) and try them out:

Be sure to pull at least 4 or 5 inches of thread through the needle before taking the first stitch. It is helpful to hold both thread tails in the left hand while slowly taking the first couple of stitches. It also helps to make sure the needle is at its highest point before taking the first stitch.
When threading, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and verify the thread path is correct.
