Washing machines these days are as much computer as an electro-mechanical device and as such contain sensitive cmos electronics that are easily damaged by voltage surges or spikes.
It is usual to protect the laptop and desktop computers with surge-protectors but it isn't generally recognised that most computerised appliances need similar protection - radios, tv sets, top boxes, washers and even the modern fridge...
A surge protector won't protect against every surge but every little helps and when a household has most things protected it produces a sort of increased herd immunity.
I suggest you call an engineer to your washer and if the repair is going to be expensive try claiming the cost from the power company.

Most likely, the surge blew the internal fuse. I would try replacing that first. If you can't do it personally, have a certified tech do it for you.
