I have't used my dtexplorer electronic drum kit for five years and now it wont power up. Any suggestions? Does it have to have the lithium battery working or should it work off mains without it?

Assuming you are using the Yamaha power adaptor you need to try and fault trace.
Is there power from the adaptor? If you have any other products that use the same power adaptor or have access to a digital multimeter measure the voltage.

If this is correct move on .

When you plug the power to the DTX express, does the socket feel loose?

If so the socket solder joint have failed - a fairly common fault Replace the socket ( this will require soldering )

If you still have a problem then the fault lies within the command unit and will probably need further specialist testing.

SOURCE: Weak LCD Display on a Yamaha DTX Electronic Drum Kit

NOT a battery issue.

Note that many of these devices have a parameter one can set for "contrast" or "viewing angle". You might want to check your owners manual for this possibility.

I downloaded the DTX manual and there IS a contrast control on the back of the unit near the top left facing the back...
IT MAY require a screwdriver to adjust it.

Does anyone know if I need the 'Brains' of the ION IED01 electronic drum kit, or can I plug the USB directly into my laptop? Somehow, I've lost that module and only have the kit!

The ION IED01 electronic drum kit requires the "brains" module to function properly. The module is responsible for converting the signals from the drum pads and cymbals into MIDI data that can be interpreted by a computer or other device. Without the module, the pads and cymbals will not produce any sound or trigger any MIDI data. Unfortunately, it is not possible to bypass the module and connect the USB cable directly to your laptop. You will need to obtain a replacement module in order to use the drum kit.

Drum kit won't power up

Get a voltmeter and check the power to see if it is working at the plug. the voltage should be 12vdc. If you don't have a meter, just take the power adaptor to radio shack, or any electronics supply house.
They'll check it for you. below is a copy of the manual. Good Luck!

It appears that you have to select a "Kit" of drums when using the external triggers. It appears that the volume level for the kit and that for each voice MAY all have to be set, especially after new firmware download. Read manual about KIT volume level and selecting voice and volume level for those. Manual is NOT very clear about these things and you have to try them as this is where the probllem is.

Electronic drum kit, with USB out, problem

Sounds to me like you have the midi tracks outputting to the microsoft midi mapper or wavetable synth, which is built into the sound chip in your pc, and that this is conflicting with the mobilepre sound card - midi is just data, no audio, needs to drive some kind of synth. what you want to do is disable your internal sound card thru device manager, then just use the m-audio mobile pre as the input/output sound card in ASIO mode - you'll need to monitor via the headphone jack on the mobile pre or plug speakers into the line outs on the interface.

Then do tutorial 8 (in help files) on using soft synths - INSERT>SOFTSYNTHs creates a midi track and an audio track in a track folder.

Good luck.

The dude.
