SOURCE: Can't connect my Bernina 170 Embroidery unit to my computer

I just bought a new laptop and upgraded to V.6. Since I have always used a magic box I didn't know how to attach my bernina 170 directly to the laptop. My bernina dealer said that I would first need a serial to usb adapter since my machine is old enough that it doesn't have a usb port on it. Make sure it doesn't have the screws on the serial part because they will not allow you to attach it to the machine. He also said that I may have to make a new com port as most pc laptops only show 4. I did a search of the computer and found how to make a new com port. A little more fiddleing around with the laptop and cables and restarting both then it somehow recognized that I had made a new com port. Voila. It now works. (I am a Mac person). Hope this helps. margaret

SOURCE: Do I need to oil the Bernina Artista 170? If so,

- yes \-every 3-5 hours of sewing or more if you are sewing very dirty fabrics (used canvas etc)
-remove the shuttle, clean and oil the "race" where the shuttle ocellates
-remove the light cover with the off set torues wrench included with your machine
oil the needle bar, take up lefver joints and the presserfoot bar. any thing more should be done by a qualified technicial who should remove back and front covers and remove lint and dirt and then oil all the bearings

How to take off needle plate on Bernina 170

Bernina calls this the stitch plate (where the feed dogs come up and the needle goes down). To remove the plate, turn off the sewing machine. Remove the sewing table if it is in place. Take off the presser foot and remove the needle. Open the free-arm cover (bobbin cover in the sewing machine front view, page 4) by tilting it down towards you. Press down on the back right corner of the stitch plate and lift the stitch plate off to remove it. See page 68 of the manual for the Bernina Artista 170 for the pictures that go with the above steps. Bernina has the manual on the product page: https://www.bernina.com/en-US/Machines-US/Series-Overview/BERNINA-artista/BERNINA-artista-170 . The current link to the manual is https://www.bernina.com/BERNINA/media/Support/Sewing_Quilting_Embroidery/artista/artista_170/Documents/EN/008853-73-04_Naehen_a170_EN_online.pdf .

I hope this helps.

Does my artista 170 have a low shank or a high shank?

Your Artista takes the Bernina foot. A regular presser foot will not work on your Bernina because the attachment mechanism is specific. Be sure to check with your Bernina dealer because there are old style and new style presser feet, and you need to get the right ones for your Artista.

Presser feet for every purpose

Even if you purchase a generic presser foot, you need to be sure you get the Bernina shank(or adapter if it is a snap-on). http://www.nancysnotions.com/product/bernina+shank+adaptor+.do

Why wont my Bernina 170 QE embroidery unit work

Electronics fail eventually. It is a bummer because I bet you love your old Bernie. Electronics are nothing for the novice to mess with unless they have loads of component level experience. I would take this to your sewing tech and have them check it out. (maybe get a new one?)

Is the firmware at the same version in the sewing machine and in the embroidery module ... if not, it wont work. Have the two worked together before, or have you just obtained the EMB separately from the machine ?

I want to connect my laptop to my Arista 170 using an usb to serial port cord. where can I find the correct cord?

I tried a Dynex USB to Serial cord found at Best Buy. worked great for an Artista 180. I used the Artlink software free download from Bernina. Works very well.
