Error could be caused by the fax machine that you are sending to. So you can receive faxes, but can't send them. Is it just the one number that causes the error, or is it all faxes sent that cause the error? What I like to do on fax troubleshooting calls, is to call the phone company that the site is using. Tell them that you are having fax problems, and ask them to test the line.
It's a communication error between the printer and the sender or the receiver. Unplug the fax phone cord from the wall. Plug in a telephone into that outlet and see if you can make a phone call. Plug your fax back in, and try it again.
The "sender's" fax machine is attempting to RECEIVE a fax. This happens because they don't have the document fully inserted into the scanner before dialing. (According to HP's error code listing for "comm error 242" - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=buu02549) This is not a problem of a bad connection. Bad line condition codes are 223, 224 and most of the codes starting with 23.
These errors mean that the communications have failed, and can mean that the receiver at the other end has terminated the call prematurely. If the problem occurs with the same destination, then the receiver fax may be the problem. If the error persists try disabling ECM
I found a blog on the Ooma site that said this can be fixed by prefixing your fax send number with 99. There were several comments from people who tired this fix and it worked for them!
