After brewing a cup of coffee the "brewunit block" displayed. When I tried to remove the brew unit, it is jammed. This has happened before, and the arm that you pull with broke. I am reluctant to pull with any force. Is there something I can do to release the unit?
There is a third solution. The brewunit drive motor has three contact switches that indicate home, preset (loading grounds, I assume) and make espresso. The problem is the three contact switches are all on one circuit, so the microprocessor knows a limit switch has been reached, but it doesn't know which one. The programming obviously assumes the limit switches are reached in the correct sequence. In my case, the microprocessor thought the brew unit was in home position when it was in the make espresso position. Miele technical support recognized this immediately, so it is a common problem. The solution is to remove the top panel of the unit, unplug the unit, unplug JP34 on the microprocessor board (four wires, red/yellow/brown/black, in the middle back edge of the microprocessor board). Plug in the unit, put it in maintenance mode, and press and hold the medium coffee button for several seconds. This will move the drive motor past the current limit switch. Plug JP34 back in, plug in the machine, and put it in maintenance mode. Press and hold the large coffee button for a second or two, maximum. Open the machine, and look at the brew unit drive male gear in the main machine as compared to the brew unit female gear. It will take several tries to get the male/female gears to match so you can plug in the brew unit. Once this is done, and the brew unit snaps in place correctly, place the machine in maintenance mode one more time and press and hold the Medium Coffee button to reset the microprocessor with the limit switches. You should be back in business!
I had the same problem, and this solution worked for me. Somehow, maybe a power failure halfway through a cycle, the shaft had become rotated 180 degrees. I had to undo one screw on the brew unit to get it out. One extra point. It is hard to align the shaft splines because you have to close the door to get the power on, and then you can't see the shaft turn. However, if you look at where the door presses on the door switch (upper right) you can see that there are extrusions each side of the switch with convenient holes in them. A screwdriver bit or similar pushed in the holes will hold the switch with the door open, so you can then see the shaft rotating and align it more easily. In maintenance mode, with j34 unplugged the large cup button rotates the shaft one way, and the medium cup the opposite way.
You're beautiful Geider!!!! Thank you!!! The only solution that worked, saved me many dollars and lotta time schlepping this thing to my arrogant pricey repair center. I guarantee a $350 bill for god knows what they would have made up on the ticket. Yes I used popcycle sticks in the door switches etc, to fool the machine into thinking door closed. Many thanks!!!
Now if someone could just explain where the mysterious sensor for coffee grounds waste unit is?? I couldn't trick that one....infrared occupancy sensor?
Aha! I found the two recessed magnets hidden in the back plastic wall of waste unit. Damn, those Italians are clever. Stealthy Magnets and reed switches. I gotta say its brilliant....except for the resetting brewer drive is a flaw.
I had a problem due to wrong insertion of the brew unit, and the unit got stuck/locked in a position where I could not remove the unit again. I have the CVA 620 / CVA620
I tried "gheider"'s advice, and it worked. But a few remarks; I found that the JP34 had a 5th wire to it - a green one.
The maintenance mode you mention, is it like this: turn the "on" switch to working w/light + press the espresso button + hot water button? - this worked for me.
I also had to align the male and the female "thing" on the backside of the brewing unit, and this could ony be done without the JP34 disconected. When connected I could not get the necessary alignment adjustments, the "male" would only rotate appx 90 degrees. But w/o the JP34 connected - no problem!
Thanx for putting out this post - helped me a lot!!!
Brilliant! You saved us a few hundred bucks gheider! Thanks!

Gheider. You made the brew home reset a breeze. Not sure ow it got beyond the home position but it did and his was an easy fix. We have 6000 lifetime cups on this baby and still going strong.
Awesome! I followed these instructions - JP34 being the critical information - and my old Miele coffee machine can now go beyond 16K coffees already made! Thanks!
I have followed these instructions but it still displays "Brewunit Stuck" even without the unit installed.
I have checked that the end-switches are working correct.
I even have bought a new gearmotor and replaced it.
I can see that the gears are moving fine, but it seems that the motor runs slow, can it be a defect mainboard?

The reset command sequence for resetting the brew to Reset Position is;
1. Close the Door.
2. Press and hold simultaneously the Hot Water and Small Coffee buttons.
3. While holding the buttons down, turn the mode knob to On with Light. At this moment, the screen will show a version number and other numbers. The unit is now in maintenance mode.
4. Release from pressing buttons.
5. Press and hold Medium Coffee button. This will move the grinder into "home" position for extraction and cleaning.
At the risk of stating the obvious (sorry!) you have probably already realised the brew unit can only be released when the unit is "aligned" correctly.
If the unit is half way through a cycle, compacting the coffee etc, it cannot be released because a small bucket shaped part of the brew unit holds it in place under a steam spout.
Ensuring the power is off, try slowly pushing down with a finger inserted just to the right of the "PRESS" tab. You should feel a small T shaped lever. In the aligned position it should be about 2cm or 3/4 of an inch from the base of the brew unit.
When you have returned the lever to this position you can remove the brew unit.
I believe there is a reset sequence but I'm afraid I don't know it (sorry).
By the way, if you are prepared to do a little swapping, the compatible parts for this coffee maker are made by Saeco, Miele just rebrand them and add 400% markup :-)
For example go here for the brew unit:
http://www.shop.partsguru.com/product.sc?categoryId=121&productId=279
Cost is $84 but you will need to swap the spouts, mind you its saves you over a $100 by not buying from Miele.
I know this is a bit hit or miss, hope it helps
Yes this helped me! but unfortunately the handle was broken off in the process-- can i buy a new one somewhere?
I have the same problem

I have the exact same problem. This happened before and after I broke the handle, A service tech. had me push a sequence of commands to re-set the unit. I can't remember what they were and am lost without this machine.
I too have the same problem, and in the process of trying to get the unit unstuck, a small spring popped out.
have the same problem but when trying reset the slots on gear in wall unit will not line up with the brew unit so you cannot put brew unit back
This turned out to be quite a problem. Got the "brew unit block" message and was unable to remove the brew unit. The cycle was stopped with the female water inlet receptacle into the brew unit mated to the hot water nozzle - as it would be during brewing. The brew unit wouldn't cycle and I didn't know about the maintenance mode. I proceeded to remove the brew unit in pieces by dismantling it "in situ": 1) remove the 3 Phillips screws holding the 2 halves together, 2)working the funnel for the grounds out of the top of the unit, 3) removing the 2 screws holding the nozzle on top of the unit, and 4) removing the screw - thru an access hole on the left front of the machine. After doing all that, I now realize that I could have removed it with only step 4. That releases the water inlet receptacle from the brew unit and frees it to be pulled out as usual - oh well.
After studying it for some time, I now see that the splines on the drive motor shaft do not align with the female receptacle on the brew unit that positions the brew chamber appropriately. How the drive unit shaft arrived at that orientation without damage to the brew unit is a total mystery.
The "best solution" posted by "gheider" was very promising for a fix, but I ran into conflicts. First of all, it's not easy to get to that circuit board. Near-complete dismantling of the door is required. Secondly, there is no JP34 connector; however, there is a J33 connector at the top right corner of the circuit board. Lastly, disconnecting it, putting the machine in maintenance mode, and pressing the medium cup dispense button does nothing. With the connector intact, in maintenance mode, pressing the medium cup moves the drive motor one direction to a limit stop, and pressing the large cup moves the drive motor to the other limit stop - neither of which are in appropriate alignment to reseat the brew unit or, for that matter, at any known functional position of that splined shaft.
A call to Miele yielded no additional information. I might try again and hope for a different person to answer the phone.
Any input is appreciated.
I had a clean message for unit for a couple of weeks now. Tried removing brew unit but it is jammed. Tried to wiggle it and removed plug. No luck in removing it. Any solutions?
Try taking out the waste bin, (instead ofthe brew unit), then, while it is out, close the main door. This will now read "waste unit missing" instead of brew unit missing" and somehow re-sets the brew unit inside so that it wont be stuck. Now you should be able to remove the brew unit. Won't correct what is wrong but willenable you to remove the brew unit. Worked for me at least!
