We were watching TV and suddenly went dead. It neither makes any sound when trying to turn it on nor it has a red light to signal it is powered.

There are a couple of possibilities here. If the set is indead dead,
the most likely culprit is the "standby" transformer. If you are
getting a click followed shortly thereafter by another click, then the
TV is detecting a problem and shutting down to prevent further damage.
And if you get no clicks or anything at all, I would suggest you to look at
the fuse and the standby transformer. The standby transformer is a
small transformer that supplies 5V to the system even when off to allow
remote control. You need to see if the primary side of this
transformer is open or not. You should have 5V.

It sounds like a shutdown circuit is being activated. This is normal in cases where the power supply id drawing excessive current. I would suggest that you get this looked at by a qualified professional. This is because this problem may be in the power supply and the voltages can get dangerous in this section of the TV set.
In any event if this is a power supply problem chances are the technician will just have to replace the power supply. Which should cost from 150-250 dollars.
I hope this helps

I have a similar issue. Sometimes the entire screen goes black and sometimes only one-half - either the top or bottom half goes black. The only solution we have found is to gently tap the TV (usually the front side) and the picture will come back for awhile. It almost seems heat related as it only goes out after the first 10 minutes of use. There must be a fix to this.
