What model answering machine do you have? On some units, there is a physical switch on the side or back to set the number of rings. The options can be limited to 2, 4 or TS (10 rings). This is the case for my AT&T 1337 digital answering system. On others, you will need to access the Menu and look for an Answering System menu item. Enter the sub-menu and look for the number of rings option. Increase this value and save the setting. You may find additional number of rings settings.
Please add a comment with the make and model for a better solution. I hope this gets you started.

the voicemail ring count has to be setup on your phone line thru your voicemail menu, and has nothing to do with the answering machine. if you don't want the answering machine to pickup, just shut it off. follow the prompt's for your voicemail settings, there you'll be able to set the amount of rings you want.
hope this helps.
