I've got a Canon 30D. The pop-up flash isn't working even in automatic mode in dark conditions. I know there's a micro-switch under the hot shoe that gets stuck sometimes. But I can't find it.

The solution for me was very simple. I added some WD-40. Turns out there was something in the flash mechanism slowing things down and WD-40 cleaned it out. (Note: WD-40 is used to displace water and does not conduct electricity. WD-40 in theory should not destroy any electronics (and in many instances is used to fix electronics) but you should still exercise great caution when using it. I recommend using the least amount possible. Please don't hold me responsible for this ruining your camera... just use some common sense.)

Hi I am not familiar with the 30D but there is a parts list shown here:
https://elektrotanya.com/canon_eos-30d_parts.pdf/download.html
Whether you can get the parts is another issue. You would have to try and see if Canon can still supply in your region. I hope this helps.

SOURCE: canon 30d with tamron af 70-300mm di macro lense showing error 99

'Error 99' indicates some problem with the AF contacts. This is a common error in Canon lenses. It could indicate a very simple problem like dirty contacts or a much serious one like the breakage of USM cable. Alternately, it can also be a card error or camera error.

First remove the lens, battery and card and leave the camera like that for about 30 min. After that, insert a fully charged battery and switch on the camera. If the error still shows up, it is a fault with the camera and has to be serviced.
If not, turn the camera off and insert the card. Format the card in the camera and depress the shutter button. If it shows an error, the card is faulty.

If not,
try cleaning the lens and body contacts (the metal contacts between the lens and body) using a pencil eraser. Be careful to hold the body facing down so that no dust falls inside. After cleaning both the lens and the body contacts, re-attach the lens and try shooting.

If the error still shows up, you need to take the lens to an authorized service center.

SOURCE: Hot shoe plastic section broke on flash unit

I managed it by buying a broken (non-working) F32X from an auction service for something like 5 bucks. I just made sure (by looking at the photos) that the hotshoe was intact.

Here's how to disassemble and replace foot (I got to this by trial and luckily no error ^^).

  1. Unscrew 2 small screws located under the battery flip cover.
  2. Put the lamp (moving part) in the upright position.
  3. Unscrew 1 small screw above the infared sensor (below the main lamp part which you moved to the upright position).
  4. Remove the cover of the infared sensor by gently pulling forward.
  5. On two sides of the infared sensor there are two small clips which hold the 2 casing pieces together. Pull them away from the casing just a tiny bit and use something to keep them in this position (I used 2 small nails). Then pull the pieces apart gently.
  6. Just behind the hotshoe casing you can see a small plastic inset -- place a screwdriver sideways between this inset and the hotshoe to help you separate the two casing parts. Be careful when doing that, don't use too much force, wiggle the casing instead to make this easier (this is the most tricky part).
  7. When the electronics is exposed, there is a single screw in the middle of the motherboard. Remove the screw and gently pull the motherboard away from the casing. You do not have to pull it all the way or disconnect any cables, you just need to make sure the bottom battery connectors are pulled out of the casing just a little, because then under the two middle battery connectors (looking from the top, as if you were putting the batteries in) you can see two screws!
  8. Unscrew those two screws, and the hotshoe will come apart. Pull it out gently and remove a single electrical connector that connects it to the flash.
Do this in case of your working lamp (with a broken hotshoe) and your replacement lamp (with a good hotshoe), and just move the good hotshoe to your working lamp.

Took me about an hour to do this (most time was spent on trying to figure out how to disassemble the lamp), and the lamp works perfectly.

Warning: better test disassembly on the replacement lamp, since even if you break it, all you need it for is the hotshoe, so you can practice on it. Only after you learn how to disassemble the F32X do this on your working lamp.

Hope this helps!

Auto flash does not pop up on Canon7D

This usually means the camera thinks there is something connected to the hot shoe, but there is nothing connected to the hot shoe. Likely one of the micro switches under the rails of the hot shoe is stuck, or you need to tighten the hot shoe. Here is a nice guide to fix this:

When the pop up flash is up no matter what the light situation the flash will not flash.

Kind of difficult to answer without a make & model, but the flash should pop up every time you power the camera ON. If you search through the camera's menu you'll find a flash option that let's you select when the flash will work. You likely have it switched OFF.

I am getting this message on my EOS 450d, (camera's built in flash pop up was obstructed turn the power switch to off and on again). I have done this several times the flash wont pop up - can you please...

Sometimes the pop-up flash on the EOS range of cameras can get stuck. The EOS family have a very tiny micro switch under one blade of the flash hot-shoe.

Get a toothpick and manually pop the switch. It should clear your error, too.

Good Luck.

I bought my new canon eos 60D..i put on external flsah to use..then after i take off the external flash, my camera's built in flash cannot pop up to take flash even i had press the flash button. How?

Hi, What external flash did you use on your Canon 60D? The internal flash will not automatically pop up if in the "Creative Zone" it will pop up with the button in the creative zones (M, AV, TV and P) it will not pop up with the button if you are in the the full auto mode (that's the little green box mode) but, should pop up automatically if required. The flash should pop up automatically in the basic zone for Portrait, close up and night photography, the button won't activate (pop up) the flash. Also the internal flash will not pop up if there is an accessory in the hot shoe. Again what external flash was it you used and did it flash?

My flash quit working on my canon EOS 500D on every mode, when I go to flash control in the menu and click on built-in flash func. settings it says ... this menu canot be displayed. external flash is...

This camera is only one model period old, is it still under warranty? If so take it in for service. I'm including a diagram of the manual release button on the side of the camera for the flash. Try pressing this button to see if it pops up. If not the problem you are experiencing is not uncommon and is due to extreme close tolerances between the sensor "pins" under the hot shoe and the hot shoe itself. There is build up of dirt or oils from handling the camera that have clogged the tiny holes under the hot shoe where these pins are located. So the camera thinks there is something in the hot show, sometimes the little plastic shipping spacer is all it takes if that's there remove it and try the internal flash manual pop up. Also the internal pop up flash will only work automatically popping up while the camera is set in the "Basic" mode otherwise you need to manually push the button to charge and use the flash. I had one person after telling her what it was that stopped the flash tapped the surface around the hot shoe and what ever it was dislodged and the flash began to work again. Really this is a service item and warranty if it's under any type of extended or factory warranty.

My auto built in flash won't open on my canon 30D

Hi,
The built in flash will (or should) pop up automatically if you are in the basic zones and the camera detects a slow shutter speed. If you are on a creative zone you need to manually push the button on the front of the camera it's a little button with a lightning bolt beside it. The flash will pop up take a few seconds to charge and you are on your way to flash photography. Two other things the internal flash will not pop up if you have another flash or accessory mounted in the camera hot shoe. When the flash is ready you should see in the viewfinder a green lightning bolt that telly you the flash is charged and ready for use.

I have a canon rebel xti with an 18 to 55 lens .. I recently bought an external flash to sit in the hot shoe .. now when I removed the flash from the hot shoe .. the cameras own flash will not pop up and...

I had the same problem.
Look closely at the hotshoe. Inside it, way over to the side, under one of the tabs on the side, is a tiny metal strip. When you attach an external flash, the strip is pushed down and holds down a tiny button that deactivated the pop-up flash. The strip can get bent so that it doesn't let the button come up even when the external flash is removed.
Very gently take a fingernail or a jeweler's screwdriver and run it underneath the metal strip. I had to do it a couple of times to get mine working again, but it's working great now!

Canon XTi Built in Flash

I found the answer and fixed my flash. Look on http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00ODWf

This will describe how, if you have been using a speedlite alot, than the little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent down thus constantly pressing down (toward the bottom of the camera) the small button which deactivates the pop-up1.gif flash even when the speedlite is not attached. Just bend the tab up a little with a jewler's screwdriver, turn the camera off and on and voila!! Fixed!!! Dan describes pushing the tab down, but on the xti, the tab needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch and fix the problem. Thanks to Dan D on photonet for saving me a service call.

How to switch on Auto Flash in Auto mode

Put the camera in "P" and press the flash button above the lens release. If the flash pops, than you probably just have too much light to need it when you are in auto. The flash button is not active in auto so if the xti doesn't want the flash in auto, u can't make it fire. If the flash button does not make the flash pop in "P", search this site for another post about flash not working and u will find that this could be the flash deactivation button in the hot shoe sticking. Not likely though with a new camera unless u have had a speedlite mounted alot.--
