SOURCE: new schlage deadbolt stuck in locked position
Make sure that the tang from the lock side actually engage the mechanism in other side of the door. If the tang is too short or not engaged the lock will not work. Also check that the two screws connecting the lock to the other side is actually tight.
SOURCE: How do I unmount a schlage keyed deadbolt?
There should be two hole plugs on the face of the interior deadbolt housing, above the key slot. They must be pryed out to access the screws. Unless it is installed inside out, then the the plugs will be outside. Yes I have seen this before or I wouldn't have mentioned it.
SOURCE: Kwikset Smart Key Deadbolt Won't Unlock
Kwikset Smart Key locks are complete junk. I am a locksmith and I am constantly going from house to house replacing these "dumb key" locks with original kwikset pin tumbler locks. What happens is either your key or the wafers inside the lock wear slightly, slightly enough to cause your keys to not turn, and since these locks cannot be picked due to a side bar system, they must be drilled off and thrown away when this happens Unless you have another access point to get in the house. If you do remove lock from the inside, throw it in the trash, buy original kwikset and replace.
SOURCE: Schlage deadbolt will not unlock even with the use of a key?
it sounds as though the linkage that pulls the deadbolt back has disengaged... if you undo the screws from the inside of the door and remove the manual knob there will be 2 more screws holding the key lock to the door. A thin flat bar is attached to the key lock that goes through the deadbolt and into the manual knob. This bar turns with the key, sliding the bolt on its track to lock and unlock the door. Once the lock is apart check the key in the lock to see if the bar turns when the key does. then see if there is anything that may be obstructing the deadbolt from sliding. The locks are pretty indestructible so if there is a problem it may have been from the install... perhaps the door is to wide for the lock to engage properly and the lock worked loose in the 6 months that it worked.

SOURCE: how do remove a schlage deadbolt that is doubled
You didn't indicate what mode. The little pins you refer to should be little caps snapped into the end of the screws. A very small screwdriver or a pocket knife should be able to remove them. Then you should have a screw head to work with. I can't remember, but it might be a square bit not a phillips head. See web site and look at installation instructions.

Hi Ginny Hall, we want to help you with your question, but we need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
it could be worn tumblers. Can you take out the locking barrel from the deadbolt and take it to a locksmith and get it checked out. If the tumblers are worn it is a cheap repair to fix at a locksmiths. Had a deadbolt do this to me !
