SOURCE: Rolling picture

Not likely. They probably just need to be cleaned and re-alligned. Rates vary, but our shop charges $20 to do that.

SOURCE: Picture rolls on playback

Hi,

I beg to differ that the head is dirty. This is based on your post "...pre recorded tape is played the picture is fine..."

I am more inclined to suspect:

  • servo calibration. This would be the capstan motor controller. The recording speed slightly differs with the playback speed. You could try manually adjusting the tracking control and see if it corrects the problem;
  • recording speed selection, LP, SP, EP/SLP. try recording at the lowest speed LP;
  • video source, possibly of a different color system, PAL, SECAM, NTSC.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back what is your video source, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: Hi8 Playback Problem

Clean the tape heads and see if that makes a difference.  If that doesn't work, it could be the tape motor is going out.  Thats typical behavior when that happens.

Video on my Sony VCR (SLV-780HF) goes gray after playing a tape a few seconds. What could be the problem?

The only real cure will be to clean the video head. If that doesn't work then I'm afraid that whatever recorded you EP mode tape was not set up well tracking wise. So other machines struggle to track the tape. Some VCR's will only playback SP or LP tapes and don't have EP mode. In which case you should check to see if these VCR's can play the EP tape and if they can't find one that can.

Blue screen on lcd screen

The playback head is probably dirty and cannot show the picture - the screen is blue. Run a blank tape in the tape drive and execute a record all the way through the tape. Then play back a pre-recorded tape to verify it plays back ok.

VHS Video Tape - Picture Roll.

Picture roll is caused by the frame rate being out of sync with the play back device. If the tape was recorded at say 25 f/m and is being played back at 26f/m. If you can, adjust the frame rate until the picture stands still.

Sony DCR-TRV510 Playback Blank or Choppy

I recently had similar problem. Sony Phone tech support was very helpful. The answers were strange. You need to make sure the cameral is turned off, unpluged and take the battery out for at least 5 minutes. (something to do with reseting firmware). That sort of worked when coupled with there last comment which was to RECORD about 15 seconds and play it back. Mine was instantly healed!

VCR sound works but no picture

It could be that the video heads are just clogged.
Get a known good video tape and put it in the unit and let it just play and play and play. Quality video tapes have head cleaning substances built into the tape. If this does not work, get a Scotch Black Watch tape head cleaner. If that does not work the the heads are bad or some other problem.

Video tapes played through VCR experience vertical 'rolling'

unfortunatly no. the vert hold is set by black bars at the top/bottom of the video signal (outside of the viewable area). it sounds like your VCR or tape is damaged.

Blue screen on playback on Sony DCR-HC40

You can see an image in a camcorder viewfinder any time the camera's actually on in record mode, whether or not the camcorder is actually recording. So that's no guarantee.

Assuming the obvious (you have the right kind of tapes, they're not in write-protect mode, you rewind before playing, etc). I recommend that you borrow a tape of the same kind from someone else and check it on playback in your camcorder. This should lead you know understand if you have a playback problem or a recording problem.
