I just bought 2 new cartridges and now it won't print in black
How long ago did you use it? If you did not use it often, probably the ink crystallized on the printing head thingy. What you need to do (assuming you installed cartridges correctly) is to run the clean feature several times until the black comes out... maybe between 6-8 times. If that does not do it, you might need to get a new printer... which is not a terrible thing, considering a new printer has new ink on it and with ink prices now you're not paying much for the printer.

I have a 7410 that is 16 months old with the same problem. It is not a broken spring. Spent over an hour on chat attempting to trouble shoot. HPs only solution was to sell me an "upgrade" for over $300 (which is more than I paid for this piece of junk.)
I expect "top of the line" products to last quite a bit longer than that. The worst thing is that with this error popping up, it is absolutely useless for anything else like scanning or outbound fax.
It should be called an "all or nothing" printer.

There is a small spring that holds the ink cartridge in the ink holder. You will see it stick out from the right hand side of the ink holder where the ink cartridge slides in. If that spring isn't being held to the ink holder by two plastic tabs, (I.E. the plastic tabs are broken) the printer will never recognize the cartridge. If the printer is still under warranty I would contact HP or an authorized repair center for HP. Both the black and color ink holder has this spring. I know of no way to repair this kind of breakage.

SOURCE: black ink will not print. Colours ok
Get a syringe, remove the needle, remove the ink cartridge and use the syringe to blow air GENTLY through the hole the cartridge connects to. Make sure you have a cleaning cloth to remove ink dislodged from pipe connected at the print head, do this gently to remove any obstruction and there should not be too much mess and can easily be cleaned up.

It is more likely that you have a bad or damaged Smart Chip on your Black ink cartridge. Check out this site, it may be helpful adaptiveink.com
