If you can hear the motor whirring and nothing is moving, it's possible the machine has seized due to lack of regular oil and cleaning.

If the bobbin winder is not engaged, then the motor belt is off. That’s why you can hear the motor but nothing happens

out. Be careful, unplug it before you check the pedal for loose wires etc.

SOURCE: foot pedal and thread guide

Same thing happened to my CE-200. It would only stitch one stitch at a time or else it would run full speed. My husband made an adjustment through a small hole on the back of the pedal and it now works much better. The adjustment hole apparently allows you to set the sensitivity of the electronics inside the pedal. He turned it slightly toward the + direction. It took a couple of small adjustments to get it to work nearly normal again.

SOURCE: No matter how hard I press down on the foot pedal

is the machine easy to turn by handwheel? if not it may be seizing and needs servicing.

if the machine is free to turn by hand it sounds like your foot control is in need of repair or replacement - see a tech.

Riccar 525 - makes a birring noise when I press foot pedal but the needle does not go up and down. I can turn dial at right hand side ok.

Sounds like the motor is trying to run but the other machine parts are not moving. If your machine is an older mechanical (not computerized), then it's very possible the machine has seized due to lack of regular cleaning and oiling. Avoid trying to run the machine in this condition as it can damage the motor.

My riccar 555su machine starts sewing as soon as I plug in. Foot pedal is stationed inside cabinet by knee, but I'm not controlling it.

The pedal is stuck in the ON position. Unplug the sewing machine and try to open up the pedal to inspect it. Or try pressing the pedal a few time to loosen up the pedal movement. Good luck!.

Machine is behaving as if not getting any power, but light is on. Press foot pedal and absolutely nothing happens

There is probably a bad connection in your foot pedal. Try moving it around with your hands at the contact points while pressing to activate. If it goes when you are shifting its position then it needs to be fixed or replaced.

Bobbin won't wind - foot pedal working but bobbin won't turn ES2020 New *unused just stored since purchase from new*

Your new but stored machine has sat long enough that any oils from the factory have become gummy and or dried out. I would take it in and have the pros service it. But for now you might try....

Turning the hand wheel by hand while you press on the pedal. This MAY free up the machine enough for the motor to take over.

The handwheel is extremely hard to turn. it will turn using the foot pedal but it makes a whining noise. could it be the belt?

Look on the back of the machine there is usually a tension dial. Try adjusting that. I f that does't work your manual lists instructions for cleaning and oiling a little bit of oil in the right place works wonders or on the oher hand a little thread in the wrong place will stop an electric motor.

Need to know how to thread a 550 super stretch Riccar sewing machine?

  • Unthread the machine.
  • Raise the presser foot.
  • Turn the handwheel until the take-up lever is at it's highest position.
  • Set the upper tension dial/knob to 5.
The threading path is as follows:

  • From the spool around the top guide, down through the right slot, up the left slot, through the eye of the take-up lever from right to left, down through the guide(s), through the needle from front to back.

Riccar 9600, no manual, how do we thread it?

If I remember it is reel of thread on the reel pin, make sure the presser foot is up and takeup lever at the top, take the thread to the left and over the top cotton guide, straight down through the tension disc and down to the larger guide, round the right and take the thread back up the left hand side, through the takeup lever right to left and follow the guides all the way down to the needle, thread needle front to back.

Won't sew when foot pedal is pressed

Since it was your grandmother's machine, it is very likely the machine has not been used in many years nor has it had any TLC. Most often, the machine will seize due to old oil that has dried out. Resist the temptation to try running the machine until the issue is addressed because the motor can be damaged. If this is the cause of the problem, you will need plenty of patience, good quality oil, possibly a handheld hairdryer, and good ol' elbow grease. But, at the end, you will have a well-functioning sewing machine.
