SOURCE: Dishwasher not getting water into spray arm, so no clean dishes

two possibilities: open door when in use. check if water is coming out of the spray arms. if it is and at a good rate, then the problem may be the spray arm jets blocked. the spray arms are only rotated by water coming out of the angled jets at their end or is the main circulating pump running ok?

SOURCE: How to remove upper spray arm of Maytag DWU 9200 BBE dishwasher

There is a plastic clip that holds the spray arm to the inlet line. This clip is in the center and has to be sqeazed together to release the arm.

Both upper and lower spray arms become clogged by different objects like paper, plastic, stems from fruits, etc... These are particles that cannot br dissolved be the detergents.

SOURCE: Dishes not clean. Lower spray arm possibly not moving.

Remove the lower basket so you can access the lower arm.

Does it spin freely? If not, remove and clean the rotating point. Make sure the spray nozzles are not clogged and there as no chunks of stuff inside the spray arm.

SOURCE: Maytag MBDF550Aww upper spray arm doesn't spin.

Cleaning the filter was the right thing to try.
Since you don't see cracks/breaks on the spray arm and it appears that it is spinning freely, I doubt that replacing the spray arm will fix your problem.
If your dishwasher is several years old, your problem is likely a failing pump motor, but before you swap that out, check that the impeller is not damaged. Good Luck!

SOURCE: dishwasher not washing dishes properly

Thanks akubra_lands, it worked for me too on model DW28W. I thought I should elaborate on your answer for anyone else who comes across this while researching the same problem.
The repair is ridiculously simple (takes about 10min) and the only tools needed are 1 philips/posidrive screwdriver and 1 flat blade screwdriver. Assuming you've unplugged it from mains power:

  1. Tip the dishwasher on its right hand side (looking from the front).
  2. Remove 4 screws from the metal base - 2 front and 2 rear (the rear ones have anti-rattle washers on them).
  3. Pull the base away, taking care of the pair of wires leading to the flood indicator float switch which is still attached to the base.
  4. Remove all 4 screws which fasten the solenoid valve to the pipe which leads from the pump upwards to the center of the tank (which feeds the lower spray arm).
  5. Pull the solenoid/valve body off the pipe and you will see it has a whitish plastic flap with a hinge at the top end.
  6. Use the flat blade screwdriver to gently prize open one side of the flap hinge and twist the flap until it is completely free of the valve body. Put the flap to one side.
  7. Replace the valve body, without the flap, and secure all 4 screws.
  8. Reassemble the dishwasher. Done
Now take a moment to admire the handiwork of the engineer who planned the failure of that innocent little plastic flap around 6 months after the expiry of the warranty.
I actually had a repair man come and look at the problem, and yep, right on cue, he told me it needed a new pump motor. $300. When he realised I was on to him he just gave up. So hard for repair people to do an honest day's work these days..

HOW DO YOU CLEAN THE FILTER IN A MDBH979AWS3

This is a self cleaning dishwasher. This means the chopper inside the wash pump assembly crushes all the food waste and pushes it down the drain.
If you are having dirty dishes then the chopper is choked and needs cleaning.

You will have to open the dishwasher wash pump assembly to get there.
See this diagram for details. The chopper is item 6. I am assuming you have cleaned all the wash arms holes etc.

It is just not cleaning the dishes. Runs - OK

Hi

If you are noticing that the dishes are not clean, then there are a few things to check for. Check the soap powder if it's kept in a dry environment. Also try replacing the powder with something like a gel or liquid. Next thing to check for is the water pressure and fill valve. Check if the water is filling in and the spray arms are throwing the water with enough pressure. Try and listen to the sound if you hear a proper spraying action sound.

If it seems as a low water pressure then check the fill valve. Now, check if dishwasher is draining the water or not. While the dishwasher is working check whether the dishwasher is draining and there is not much left out water after the cycle is complete. Try cleaning the spray arm with a soft brush. The water temperature plays a major role in cleaning of dishes. The temp should be between 125 and 150 F for dishwasher to clean the dishes. Hope this helps...

It runs but nothing gets clean maytag dishwasher

With nothing getting clean, the first thing to do is clean the filter and also underneath it. You will need to remove several screws and the lower spray arm to do the cleaning. Watch out for broken glass! Rinse out the filter as best possible.
Look carefully at the impeller to make sure it spins freely and is not damaged. While you are down there, look for any problems (brakes/damage) with the heating element.
Reassemble the filter and spray arm. Test with a load of dishes.
If problems continue, but the spray arms appear to be spinning well, the problem is most likely a failed heating element. Replacing it should make thing work much better.
Please get back to me with what you find. Good Luck!

Dishes not getting clean, left with gritty residue. Could the filter be backed; if so how do I fix it?

Had the same problem with a GE Nautilus 3400 series.
Solution:

- In their manual, GE recommends not stacking tall dishes on the bottom right tray - this prevents the dishwashing powder from fully dissolving. Are you using the right detergent and rinse-agent ?

If your upper arm is not turning during wash (DW leaves residue on top-shelf items), do the following:

1) Empty the DW.

2) Pull down the rotating arm on the DW ceiling. Thoroughly clean the passageways (I had to tap it on the counter to break-down the sediments).

3) Inspect the mesh-screen filter located on the floor in the back - if it's backed up (ours was backed-up from the inside), you'll need to clean it by removing 4, 1/4" screws holding it to the DW floor and throughly cleaning it (I also unscrewed the plastic valve located on the bottom of the filter compartment). While you're at it, remove the plastic mesh on the DW floor (2 screws) and fish for any objects and sediments blocking the pump.

4) Replace filter and bottom mesh and operate the DW in "Rinse" mode.

5) Press the rotating arm back in and operate the DW in "Rinse" mode. Check rotation.

- Good Luck !

Dishes not getting clean

In the center of the arm is a screw on cap. It looks like it's part of the arm, but the round center screws off.

Water not spraying hard enough

Could be a a couple different issues.. Not filling with enough water or food chopper broke or food chopper filter screen clogged.

Check water level:
Run the DW and wait for the main wash to start (water will fill. pause then complete fill) The water should be no more than 1/4 inch below the heating element. If not there..replace water inlet valve.

Inspect food chopper:
Remove lower spray arm and rear water supply tube to upper spray arm. Remove torx screws that secure the sump cover. Remove the rounded cover on the left side to expose the chopper assembly. Inspect for breakage of blockage. There may be an additional plastic screen to remove first.
