If the tray is out of alignment you may as well replace the entire DVD R/W device. Even if you manage to reset the alignment, the read/write head may be misaligned and recording messed up. A new drive is only $30
First, open the external casing.
You'll find an "internal" CD/DVD drive, connected to an adapter, and the adapter connects to the USB cable.
Now, look at the adapter -- it could be a "parallel-ATA" interface, or it could be a "SATA" interface. The new CD/DVD drive will have to have the same connectors (data and power) as the adapter.
You might have to exchange the SATA device for a Parallel-ATA device.
If you have a parallel-ATA CD/DVD drive, look at the back of it.
There is a tiny jumper, and a few labelled settings:
* MA(ster)
* SL(ave)
* C(able)S(elect)
Move the jumper to the 'MA' setting, so that the USB-adapter will recognize the CD/DVD drive.
Connect the drive to the adapter.
Close the case.
You're good to go!
No dear. External Hard disks, pendrives etc does it for you.
A CD/DVDRW plays only CDs & DVDs + burns CDs & DVDs.

It could be that the media that you are using is not compatible with the writer. Is the rewriter a DVD +-R drive or just a CD-RW drive? What software are you using to write to the media.
you will have to be more specific
