SOURCE: hello doctor my kid 3yrs old having cough since
Hello there,
Cough medicines are being prescribed to be taken only for ONE WEEK and your kid has been taking cough medicines for almost 10 days without development to his or her health. You should stop giving him/her those medicines and immediately consult the doctor regarding your kid's cough. The cough might have complications and continuously giving her medicines without doctor's prescription is not healthy. I would advice that you take him or her to the doctor or pediatrician.
SOURCE: I have had a really bad cough for the last few weeks. How will I know when to go back to the doctor?
Firstly you
should trust your instinct and if you feel that your cough hasn't got any
better, or maybe is even worse, you should go back to your doctor. Some coughs
are harmless but can hang around for weeks, but it's always good to be sure. If you have
any of the following symptoms, you should seek emergency medical care straight
away; -
Extremely
short of breath -
Turning
blue in the lips or finger nails -
Swelling
of the lips -
Coughing
up blood
Not everyone
has the same symptoms for whooping cough but babies and young children might
have severe coughing spells that make it hard to do every day activities such
as eating, breathing or sleeping. The cough often has a whooping sound (hence
its name) after breathing in. Whooping cough can also cause a runny nose and a
fever.
Whilst there
isn't much a doctor can do to treat flu (other than advise pain relief,
decongestants etc), it can be helpful to see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis
and especially if the symptoms are not improving.
Seek medical
attention if:
- There is
difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Confusion
- Severe or
persistent vomiting
- Seizures
- Chest pain
