No this is not normal. You have a problem refered to as "short cycling". This is an indication of low refrigerant charge. You need to have the unit leak checked, repaired and recharged,

Hi and welcome to FixYa. The symptom you describe can be caused by several things.
If the belt is getting loose the belt switch can cause it to shut down completely with no power (Item 5) This link:

Also if your dryer has a thermistor vs a thermal fuse
(Item 27) of this link: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5176187&diagram_id=1363930#d1363930
it can also shut the dryer down when it gets too hot.
You should check all of your vent ducting from inside the dryer all the way through to the exit point on the outside wall (vent flapper) for obstructions / lint.
Also if you use dryer sheets (Fabric softener) you should clean your lint filter with white vinegar then soap and water / rinse. The particulate fromthe dryer sheets cakes onto the filter. It looks clean but willnot pass enough air.
This should give you something to go on to try and resolve the shutting down issue.
Thanks for using FixYa.

HE shows up because there is no heat . Check the fuses in the panel and the heater itself. Also could be the sensor is not working to tell the control to turn the heater on.

I have the same dryer and the same problem. The machine was bought at Home Depot as a housewarming gift by my parents. It was less than a year and half old at the time it completely shut down. I have been fighting with whirlpool over their inability to fix the problem for almost 4 months now. In my opinion this is a major defect and the machine should be replaced regardless of the warranty status.
