SOURCE: Briggs and Stratton OHV V-Twin 24hp repetitive valve adjustment

Try pulling out the choke a little, if it stops backfiring the mixture is too lean, check the intake
pipes at the cyl head and also the plastic runners to the carb for leaks.

SOURCE: how do you adjust the valves on a 17.5 ohv briggs

Hi 1st remove the rocker cover and spark plug
hold a long skinny screwdriver down the plug hole and wind the engine by hand until you get top dead centre (NOTE WATCH ROCKERS) first the intake valve will open then close when it closes the piston should be coming up to top dead centre and both valves should be closed and the rocker loose setting should be 0.004 thou you need to undo the locking screw down the centre of the adjusting nut then you can adjust to setting, (DONT FORGET TO DO THE LOCKING SCREWS BACK UP) reassemble

SOURCE: Briggs and Stratton 22hp v twin OHV smoking badly

First thing to do is pull your dipstick and check for broken or missing O-ring also as you pull it, look to make certain that it was seated properly and all the way locked. If either condition exists, you will be leaking into the crankcase which will cause your symptoms

Remove the spark plug. Turn the flywheel until the piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Continue to turn the flywheel until the piston drops down 1/4". Set the intake valve at .004" - 006". Adjust the exhaust valve to .006" - .008". You can use a pencil to know that the piston down 1/4". Just put it in the spark plug hole against the top of the piston and then place a mark on the pencil at the lip of the spark plug hole. Now measure up 1/4" and place another mark. Turn the flywheel unit the second mark is flush with the lip. The feeler gauge should be snug but move freely when adjusting the valves. Double check it after locking the rocker arm nut down.

Briggs & Stratton 23 HP VANGUARD. The right side runs cold?

Question edited for clarity and make sentences.
Question moved form Cars and Trucks to make model category.

My guess is you have a leaking valve. The compressed air in the leak down test is closing it. Remove the heads and lap the valves. Check the valve stems are true and not sticking. The variation is compression 50 v 30 is too great.

I have a briggs and stratton 13.5 hp power engine that wont start. The engine is almost new, oil level is good and when I remove the spark plug cap and dold it near the top of the plug and pull start it I...

there may be safety switches, but if you are getting a spark, that is not the problem. After you cranked with no start, is the spark plug wet with gas? can you smell gas in the cylinder after pulling the plug? It could be that your carb float/needle valve are stuck closed. Try lightly tapping the side or the carb.

Clean the cumbustion chamber on my riding mower

It is much more likely that there is an ignition or carburetor issue. If the mower is less than about 10 years old, it may be an OHV (overhead valve) engine. An overhead valve engine like the one pictured above is unlikely to have developed carbon build-up. If it is an older flat head (side valve) engine, it might have built up carbon deposits after several years. If the spark plug screws into a finned flat plate cylinder head, it is flat head in which case unbolt the bolts around the perimeter of the head, and scrape the carbon off the head, being careful not to scar the interior surface or the gasket surface, and re-assemble.

Mower sluggish run nunder load

The first thing you need to do is readjust the valves properly. Remove both sparks plugs and rocker covers. I stick a long philips head screwdriver in the spark plug hole in #1 cylinder (rt. side) and turn engine by hand till piston is at TDC. (both valves closed) Set int. and exh. at .005. Then do same to # 2 cylinder after turning it to TDC too. If that doesn't clear up the problem, it'll be time to go into that 2 barrel carb. Let me know. Dwain
