A monocular is a small, low-powered telescope that you hold in your hand like a set of binoculars. Using one eye, you can see through a monocular and look at far away objects when you are hunting, camping, or watching sporting events. You can also use a monocular as a magnifier to hold over text that is hard to read. You can select a monocular by looking at the magnification power as well as the size and weight of the monocular. You should also shop around for the monocular and try a few options so you can find one that is high-quality and within your budget.
The following article talks about how to Select the best monocular lens between your budget and needs.

SOURCE: How do I select a monocular lens?

Having a monocular is a great alternative other than carrying a pair of binoculars. They are significantly more compact, lightweight and portable but they come with only the half of the size of binoculars. The following article talks about how to Select the best monocular lens between your budget and needs.
Need to consider the points below:

  • Monocular vs. Spotting Scope
A monocular significantly featured a compact and portable design. Monocular lenses that are bigger generally have more power, larger lenses and wider views are known as spotting scopes. A spotting scope will be notably greater and heavier than a typical monocular which are frequently used for bird watching, hunting, or spotting subjects from a static position. In case require better performance, and you are compatible with the size or weight, then you have the hardly better option than a spotting scope
  • Good Monocular Power
The power or magnification are the things that you should consider first when choosing a monocular lens. This device typically has a higher magnification of 6x to 10x which will allow you to see further and in more detail. The monocular with 9x or 10x magnification will usually slightly high priced more than 6x or 8x ones. The good thing is, about this device, that you can get the same power of binoculars, but they are only half of the size of their counterpart.
  • Right Lens Size
If you look at the specifications of a monocular, you will find two numbers. For instance, 8×25; which means 8x, the first number, denotes its power, and 25mm, the second number, represents the size of its lens.

A monocular comprises with a lens of 20mm to 42mm. With a bigger monocular lens, you can observe see a wider view, and will also result in a better, sharper image while looking through the device. The downside is that the larger the size of the lens is, the heavier and bigger the device will be.
  • Monocular Size and Weight
On the whole, an 8×25 or 10×25 monocular is considered to be a pocket-size or compact device which will simply be fit in your pocket. They usually come with a small carrying bag. The pocket monocular works as a cool device. They are very portable as it is easy to carry them around everywhere - keeping in the car or in the pocket when climbing. These devices are low-priced and can also serve well.

You will have to keep it in your mind that an 8×25 or 10×25 pocket monocular is very small, so you cannot expect too much performance from it! These tiny monocular have a small lens but can provide a very limited view though they have good power. At first, you will need to detect your subject and later use the monocular in a "point and shoot" style. It is not at all easy to use them since they have a small eyecup. If you want to enjoy a wider, sharper and brighter image, then you should always opt for a 30mm to 42mm monocular.
  • Night Vision Monocular
If you are planning on buying a monocular in order to use at night or whole darkness, then you should go for a night vision monocular. IR illuminator is built-in these devices which will increase your night vision capability. Having less magnification, you can use them normally to get a better image and off course less fuzzy. These monocular usually come in different sizes, magnification and price range.

My nightvision stop working when my little sister droped it on the driveway.I tock off the big lens and borken glass fill out.were can I get it repaired.

Probaby yes! Remove the front lens and measure the diameter of the threaded hole then measure the the thread size. All measurement sizes should be mm , such as, 25.4mm equal 1 inch, or 12.7mm equal 1/2 inch.
I don't know who the manufacture is for this Famous Trail NV monocular here in the US. The monocular was manufactured in Russia.

Now send these web site an email, or maybe you could call them; opticsplanet.net, nightvisionsales.com, nightgalaxy.com Maybe this will be some help. stewbison

Hello, is the IR glowing red, don't look into the IR lens. Just place your hand in front of it and see the is a red glare on your had. If there is a red glare then IR is work.
Another thing when you taking a look see through the Night owl NV monocular there should be a green glow from the image intensifier tube, if not, then the NV monucular isn't working properly. stewbison

I just got this from a panw shop, it doesn't work it need a battery and I take it it also need a charger for the battery, where is the best place to get one of each, can I get one from the factory, along...

OK, first it doesn't need a charger. Most charger are external types. Battery, it probably uses one (1) CR123A which is a three (3) volt battery, or two (2) "AA" batteries which are rated at 1 1/2 volts each. Batteries you can get them every where, Radio Shack, WalMart, Kmart, Sam's, Walgreen's, One Stop Batteries, etc. The average life for the CR123A is about twenty hours of use, and it probably the same for the double "AA's.

Here how this Famous Trails End NV FT300 Monocular work. The monocular has two button-one for on/off, and the other is for the IR luminations.

.WARNING!!!! This a night vision devise will be used at Night! Don't taking a look see at bright lights or using the night vision devise during the day... Light time.

Now the monocular has a build in shut off for to much light entering the image tube. Don't try it, it works. The more times the monocular NV is subjected to bright lights the more it destroys the thinly film cover over the plate. One it gone, new image intensifier tube and the cost will be about $200 plus shipping and handling. If you just have to take a look see in the monocular. Get a couple of optic lens cover that snap on. The front Optic cover drill about 1/16 in hole in the center of the cap, that it. Now you can take the back lens cover and remove it. Turn your monocular on and take a look through the eye piece. It should be green, if not, take it back the Pawn Shop and ask for a refund.

If you don't have lens covers that OK too. Just get in dark room and point the monocular at one of the corners. Don't point it any lights. It will turn green. I will advise you don't test the auto shut off. You don't know who had first, second or even third time, how it was handed and used. stewbison

Lights come on but nothing shows its black.lens looks good

I have seen a few of this model and the tubes were gone in each case. Best way is to check if HV present at tube - get someone who knows what they are doing to take a look. If it is the tube, it will be expensive to repair. Unscrewing the lens may reveal that the inner surface of the tube has dark marks, also indicating possible tube damage.
