I have a 42" sanyo LCD TV. There is audio but no picture. There are no backlights but I can see an image on the screen with a flashlight. Can you help me?

Is this an LCD tv? You didn't include a model number so i can't really answer, but if its an LCD tv then try shining a flashlight on the screen at an angle, can you see what looks like an image on the screen with the flashlight? Its pretty common for the backlighting in a LCD to fail causing it to appear as if there is no picture but the picture is there just no lighting to make it visible. If there is still no picture with a flashlight up close looking at the screen it could be many things, failed capacitors in the power supply thats preventing the screen from coming on, a bad mainboard that the video failed but the audio still works, lots of options here.

The first thing to do is check to see if the screen backlighting bulb is burned out, to do this shine a flashlight from behind the screen and see if an image is there, if it is the bulb is burnt out.

There is no picture tube in a modern flat screen TV.
And unless it's physically broken, it's usually something else that has failed and not the screen.
A picture tube is a CRT (cathode ray tube) that sends electrons from the back to the front to light up different color phosphorous dots.
A modern flat screen TV on the other hand is LCD (liquid crystal display) that turns on and off to allow backlighting through multi colored filters. (LED TV also uses a LCD screen, the only difference is the backlighting is LED and not fluorescent lamps.)

Try the flashlight screen test with TV on to be sure an image is showing, hold flashlight above at an angle, if you see a faint image the motherboard needs replacing

This problems the two long circuit boards called the inverter board is dead.These two long inverter boards give ur tv a screen light called a backlight that where ur tv getting it light for the tv images.Take ur tv a parts and replaced these two long inverter boards.U will get ur tv picture back.Tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy those two long refurbish inverter boards for the replacement.

There may be different reasons for that.

Find out the model / chassis and give a better description for the problem in order to get better help.

The backlight is out most likely caused by either the T conn or the Invertor. The invertor is most likely you can get replacement boards from www.tvcircuitboards.com leave a email if your not sure what you need.

Power on the unit in the dark room then shine with the flashlight directly in the screen, you will barely see the images. This is because your backlight is not functioning. The following reason is the caused.
1. Power supply - missing B+(supply voltage) coming from this board feeding the inverter board. This is caused by faulty transistor, dried/leaky electrolytic capacitor, open fusible resistor.
2. Inverter board - even the B+ is good from the power supply, if the fuse, driver transistor, driver transformer is faulty no output to the backlight resulting to black picture.
3. Busted backlight - even inverter board is good but if this is busted resulting to black picture also.
Diagnosing the fault is technical and if you don't have necessary tools and test instrument and can't fix it yourself, I would advice you to look for an experienced technician to isolate the problem.
