Hello, Swannie -

Are you asking about a Winterhalder & Hofmeier clock? If so, what model are you asking about? You can add the model information by choosing Comment and typing the information.

If you do not know the model of the clock, if it is not a tall case (grandfather) clock and you can transport it easily, I suggest you take your clock to a reputable clock repair shop in your area and ask one of the knowledgeable people at the shop about setting the time and winding your clock.

Best wishes.

Build your own tic toc clock

You can try google but yellow pages may be better.

Search your yellow pages for clock repair or watch repair. Not many left but they exist. These guys don't always show up on google.

I believe the grandfather clock I was given was over wound by the previous owner. Is there anyway that I can fix this myself so that it is affordable?

If you have the patience, you could try the following.
Set the pendulum in motion - this will slowly wind down the mainspring. The clock will probably stop after a few seconds. Set the pendulum swinging again as necessary, and if you're lucky the period that it ticks for will increase each time.
You will need to be patient and persevere - what you are doing is very gently releasing the tension on the mainspring.
This is not guaranteed to resolve the problem, but it won't harm the clock or your bank balance to try. Failing that, there is a mechanical fault that is causing it not to wind and you are strongly advised to place it in the hands of a reputable and competent clock repairer.

Setting chimes and time for elgin e77

I thought I had some instructions on that Elgin clock, but it was for a mechanical wind up unit. There were many different models of these programmable clocks manufactured and the instructions differed. And they are just not readily available. I received a sports watch in a trade (with no instructions)and after 3 months I am still trying to determine how to program it!

It might be that the "H" stands for hours and the "S" for set. So how do we set the minutes? I will pose this question to my Internet Clocksmiths Group and see if anyone knows. If I do receive some instructions, I will get back with you.

Does anybody know which way i'm supposed to wind my cartier santos watch? Options: clock-wise, counter clock-wise, or multidirectional?? thanks

mcdevito75 here, Generally your Cartier watch is wound in a clockwise direction simply, due to how it:s made, in this direction the mainspring is tightened or wound and turning the crown in a counter-clockwise position only free wheels the winding mechanism. I would advise you wind your watch in a multi direction, however not to the very, very end of It"s winding capacity, once you feel the crown getting tension only 4--5 more multi-direction turns should be enough to maintain a good wind to your Cartier watch.

What can I do if my clock is over wound?

mcdevito75 here, The mainspring can jam iof winding is forced to it"s limit. I personally have my technique but I would have to have the watch or clock here with me. You can try too pull out the stem and move the hands as though setting the time, at times this action can get the mechanism going again, You can also try tapping on the stem, as though you were trying to hammer it dowm, make sure stem is fully seated to wind, use a knife handle to tap on top of the stem. Other than that you can visit the repair service directory right here at FixYa, bottom of the page click on repair service directory then watches.

Don't know how to properly wind Elgin 400 day anniversary clock

Wind the clock until there is a sudden increase in resistance (it is then fully wound). So not apply a great force, as older clocks may be weaker and overloading the spring may break the termination and result in a new spring being required.

If you think it is becoming too stiff, just stop winding and see how long it runs for. I have often heard the term "over winding at clock" but have never quite understood the term. As a retired engineer I think that springs that break because of overenthusiastic winding are probably near the end of their life anyway.
