It depends on the grass seed you are using. Please give Scotts a call at 877-465-5160, and we can see if we have a setting for you.

What setting is used to apply 1/4 lb per 100 sq ft?

BigVin, normally the bag of seed tell what setting to put spreader on for its proper application, If not try it on #4 setting, it all depend on how fast you wind and walk with a hand spreader. Good Luck.

Need settings for spreader for fescue grass seed

When spreading seed, the setting is not important. Adjust it high and go for a light dusting of VISABLE seed on the preped soil. Then rake in lightly. You can never put too much seed down unlike fertilizer. Good luck, and keep it wet for 30 days for best results!

What settings to use for grass seed

If you are planning to overseed or reseed your yard, it would be best to use a rotary spreader instead of a drop spreader. When spreading seed set the spreader on 2 or 3, It really depends on the square footage of your yard. If you purchased seed from a local nursery or hardware store, read the bag and it will have the correct spreader setting on the bag. If you just bought a few pounds and the clerk weighted it up for you, you probably can call and ask the clerk for the spreader setting. But I'm pretty sure setting 3 will work just fine.

I have lost my instructions for my hand held spreader. The numbers on the side that control the outlet of whatever is in the spreader--do these indicate the number of pounds per 100 sq. ft?

Below is a list of spreader settings. You may want to call Scotts at 800-543-8873 and verify the product you are using is able to be used in a hand held spreader.
  • For fine grass seed (blue, rye, fescue) use setting 1
  • For coarser seed (tall fescue) use setting 2
  • For light fertilizer (Scotts fertilizers at a regular rate) use setting 3
  • For heavy fertilizer (Scotts fertilizers at a heavy setting) use setting 4
  • For pelletized fertilizer and ice melt products use setting 5

What setting do I use on the Scotts Mini Spreader?

Here is the rule of thumb to determine your spreader setting.

Place enough material in the hopper to cover 1,000 sq. ft. (Usually indicated on the bag of product, if not indicated, take pounds in bag and divide by the number of thousand square feet bag covers. Example: 23lb bag covers 5,000 sq ft, divide 23 by 5 to get 4.6lbs per 1,000 sq ft).

* Place the spreader setting on a low setting (Usually one-fourth of the spreader setting range or less).

* Spread the material over a 50 x 20 ft. area (This is 1,000 sq. ft.).

* If material is left over, they need to increase the setting.

* If they come up short, they need to decrease the setting.

* While this is not a scientific method for getting the spreader setting, it will be close.

Many years ago I bought "shutes" that attached to each side of my Scotts drop spreader. They could be filled with ordinary flour and manually released with a handle on each of them so I could see the area...

Scott's no longer makes this handy helper. Do this, get some white sand and mix it with the grass seed. It will mark your lawn and help you see where you spread the seed or fertilizer. Joe
