Those older machines do need regular cleaning and oiling. I suspect the oil has dried and caused the switch mechanism to seize. As time goes on, more parts may seize, so it's probably important to get it addressed soon. It could eventually damage the motor if the motor is trying to move seized parts. Well worth the expense if you value your machine.

Hey. It's full out possible that you have it on the right setting...but concider this - the switcher inside the sewing machine could be broken (ie. It's moving to different stitches - but not the one you have the outside set for)

SOURCE: Machine will only sew in reverse
Hi
Questions.
Does the machine only feed in reverse?
Will the machine feed as normal(forward).
If the machine will only work in reverse, then it is highly likely it is stuck in reverse and needs a good service to free it off.
It is very difficult trying to diagnose the problem without looking at the machine. A reasonable sewing machine tech should be able to sort the problem in no time at all.

The feed mechanism needs to be oiled. Take off the bottom cover and look for any place where two parts move against each other. Some binds can be very difficult to remove. Try spraying everything with a light weight oil (I like Tri-Flow) and let them soak over night. Then manually try to move the feed dogs with your hand. Hopefully it will break loose.
Good luck!

In the center of the stitch length knob (at the right side of the machine) is a button. You would push that button in to get the machine to reverse.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I finally figured out that I had the straight stitch needle plate (the one with the single hole), rather than the zig zag needle plate (the one with the curved hole). When I changed plates, it worked fine.
