pull plug and try motor again if boggs or still problem internal motor problem or belt- pulley causing drag turn normal need to recheck electrical system
The B&S Vangaurd engine requires periodic valve lash adjustment (100 hrs by schedule). Overdue valve lash adjustment typically manifests with starter stall (starter engages, rotates engine, hesitates or stalls, and then spins/starts).
Remove spark plug and observe condition. Fouled with oil, bad motor. With plug removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray WD40 in spark plug hole, pull rope several times see if oil blows out. Spray a lot of starter fluid in spark plug hole, replace plug. Spray starter fluid in air cleaner area of carb, try to start. Replace spark plug, try to start. Ensure oil is full, all mowers have a low oil sensor now. 30w oil. Always use Stabile in gas.
Can you hear the motor run when you try to start it when it's cold? If so then it could be in the drive mechanism. I had one that I thought had a bad bendix in the starter. Here it has a rubber disc that turns the starter sprocket. I removed the retainer, took off the sprocket. Cleaned everything and re-assembled, and low and behold it worked. A new starter was over $100.00. Now if yours doesn't even turn when its cold, I'd look into the starter push button, or key switch for bad connection.
