Sewing machine not stitching at all

I'm using a Singer Fashion Mate 237, and I can't get a single stitch out on fleece. It was working fine before though. I cleaned my machine and oiled it, changed my needle various times and with various sizes, and it still won't stitch.
It will only stitch when I use the hand wheel and, when the needle is down, roll it backwards and forwards a few times in the same place.

The only thing I can see wrong is my shuttle hook has a lot of little scratches on it. Earlier, I was trying to sew through six layers of fleece, and it would keep making a loud sound. I suppose this is what the loud sound was.

It sounds like a lot, but I only go through that many for an inch or so at once. ^^; I've been making hats like these, and I need to go through that many on the ears; http://fc00.deviantart.com/fs45/f/2009/1...
I made a couple dozen without problems on a size 14 needle, oddly enough. I've tried size 16, but it hasn't helped since I've had the problem. I'll try to adjust the timing though! Thanks for the link!

Update: Okay, for some reason, it sews mostly fine when the needle is set on the left. When it's centered, it misses nearly all the time, and when it's on the right, it hits the shuttle. The bobbin moves when I set the needle position, so I don't get why it does this.

SIX Layers !!!!
You really need a size 16 needle that won't bend and miss the hook by the sound of it....can you sew on less challenging thicknesses OK ??
If not, the timing may need adjusting...here is a link to assist:

I have a Singer Fashion Plate Model 237. When you are sewing, no stitches. I've check the tension it's threaded correctly. Does not show a stitch, have no idea on what to check

Is the foot resting on your fabric and not hovering above it? Do you have the bobbin threaded? It's the fabric too soft? These things can effect the stitch and how it holds.

I cannot form any kind of stitch with my Fashion Mate #237. What could be the problem?

Hello:

Check your needle. Make sure it is fully inserted into the needle bar clamp. Also check and clean your bobbin area and under the needle plate and around the feed dogs.

If that doesn't work for you ... get a magnifying glass and check the shuttle hook, needle plate and bobbin for burrs.

Otherwise your machine may be mis-timed and need professional cleaning and adjustments.

My singer model 237 makes a stitch that doesn't look right. The bottom thread is just goes through the top thread loops under the material

Hi, if stitches are off, there is a problem with balance between the upper and lower stitch adjustments. You have to tweak these. Also, make sure there is no lint in the bobbin case area or under the feeddogs. Here is an excellent blog for 237 Fashion Mate owners. You are lucky to have one of these from the 1960's. http://blog.sew-classic.com/2010/02/02/singer-237-fashion-mate-sewing-machine-reveiw.aspx

Singer 9113 not zigzaging all time when using polar fleece. Have changed needle am using size 11. Most stitches coming out straight. Am making polar fleece socks and when zigzaging the heel it does not...

I am kind of confused as to why it will not zig zag, have you tried moving the needle shaft back and forth after oiling your machine? I was looking at your manual online at Singerco.com and it seems like a very nice machine. I also would try a tear away stabilizer, or good old fashioned gift tissure paper, to see if the feed dogs will get some traction. Other than that, I would call singer at 1-800-4singer and ask for some other solutions. I am hoping that it is a free fix.

How do I reverse stitch on a singer 362 fashion mate model

The large knob in the center of the stitch length dial is a button, push it in to reverse stitch. Hold in as long as you need to reverse stitch, then release to resume regular stitching.

Singer Fashion Mate 257 won't make a zig-zag stitch. Straight stitch is beautiful.

You may need to retime the machine, email me for attachment of instructions [email protected]
