I have the same problem. I think it's a factory defect. The descale button doesn't work, and it's never been descaled. I just leave vinegar in the machine overnight and run water to rinse it the next day. Vinegar is just dilute acetic acid. Citric acid works better than vinegar, but it's harder to find. It doesn't have the smell that vinegar does.

I had this problem too. The instruction manual says to turn the steam knob only half way counter-clockwise after pressing the button for 5 seconds, but you need to turn it ALL the way to have the procedure start (at least, that was the solution with my machine). Good luck!

I have the same problem. The descale cycle won't start when I hold down the descale button. It just keeps blinking. I've just been running vinegar through it, and hoping that it removes the lime. I think the button is just bad, or the computer is bad. It seems like a factory defect because the descale cycle hasn't been done enough to wear out the button.
