Start button
I guess you meant that you clicked the lower left windows ? start ICON, and the desktop screen froze?
NO computers model stated
now windows version stated.
a hopeless post if ever...
1984 to now 1000s models of PC made by HP and 100s of OS.
my guess is :
1: THE Unstated PC is overheating, fan dead or packed.
if a desktop up to 3 fans dead or 2 for sure.
2: the unstated OS is corrupted with virus, as all XP versions are.
3: HDD going dead.
4: MISSING OR Wrong drivers loaded for sure the SCREEN driver called the GPU driver, 100s of versions exist,
5: and lots more, PC have the greatest signal points of failure of any device, made. in a shop we use tools to do tests and diagnose what is wrong.
got tools?
Question --why are you hitting the start button on a unit that is open and ready to work
if as you say the desk top is showing and icons are showing then click on an icon and it will work

Hi dogbyte,
For some reason, certain Windows Mobile (Standard) devices don't like "list" format for the Start Menu.
Give this a try:
1) Remove the battery for 1-2 minutes. (This allows any cached memory to clear)
2) Power the device back up.
3) Before openning ANY other apps, navigate to Start > Settings > Display > Start Menu Style
4) Change this value from "List" to "Grid"
5) Click Done twice, then click the Home key.
6) Give the Start menu another try. (Does this resolve the issue?)
Another forum suggested that Windows Mobile seems to be a little picky about which application appears first on the Start Menu. If you have any custom applications installed, it's possible WinMo's start menu just isn't playing nicely.
Hope this helps!

Please try these steps to solve your problem:
1) Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to run the Task Manager
2) Click on "File" on the Task Manager upper menu
3) Click on "New Task (Run)" option, Run window should appear
4) Type "explorer" without the quote, on the Run window
5) Your start menu and icon on desktop should now appears

go to control panel > power options. Turn off hibernate and sleep mode, change all settings to never sleep and change the setting for "when closing the lid" to "do nothing" sleep mode, hibernation can destroy the registry on these laptops, you are better off turning that garbage off and just letting it run.
