There should be a rubber / neoprene sealing washer that goes between the tank and the toilet bowl.
If you are reusing an old one it may have become too compressed. Buy a new one (they come in standard sizes) from a DIY store

Usually they have a small screw, but its hidden under a cap. Look at the handles you should see a small plastic cap sometimes colored red and blue for hot/cold. Using tip of small knife pop out the cap/plug. The screw holding the handle on is in there.
