In my experience (USA) text messages work regardless of phone brand or carrier. However in other countries things may be different. Can you describe more of your situation?
The same way as you send to other phones
Just the way you send to other android/ window phones. Ask the recipient to download whatsapp. Then you can send images videos and texts
SOURCE: Phone Sending MMS Messages as Default
The phone allocates a certain amount of storage for messages on a whole. Even though there may still show space available for text messages, you have hit an invisible "limit" and the phone is now defaulting to MMS messages because there is "room" there. Delete a fair amount of messages and you should be able to start sending regular text's again.

try deleting the messages in your inbox. If the number of messages if over 200, this problem comes up. It fixed the phone I have.

hi there,
call the customer service of your service provider ( AT&T,Vodafone,Verizon etc)....they will set up message center number on your phone , the one that you have might be incorrect...your mobile operator will send you sim updates that will refresh the settings ....and then you will get the text message options
cheers
