If this is one of the big "taco cart" portables you need to check that the vent on the gas cap is open when you're running the engine. In the center of the gage on the gas cap is a little knurled knob, turn it counter clockwise (lefty loosey), about a half turn or so and run the generator.
If that doesn't solve your problem add to it here, otherwise please give me a rating I'm trying to build a little credibility here and could use the help.

is this unit diesel or gas? If its gas driven, the carburetor needs to be removed and cleaned out. Also make sure your gas is fresh. If not drain fuel tank, remove carb, clean out, re-assemble & test. Check fuel filter, oil level.

had the same problem, so I installed a radio shack ground loop isolator and fixed the problem, it has 2 rca plug inputs and 2 rca outputs, goes in-between the sub and the input cables of your system to the sub...that's if your using the rca inputs..
