I have a Singer Merritt, I got it at Goodwill a few years ago, I looked up the manual on the internet and have printed it out in case you need it. BTW, the reason I bought it is because it's superior to what's manufactured today, all parts are metal, not plastic. This machine is no longer made as you've suspected so it was probably made in the 50's. See if you can find any info on the internet as I've done. At my age, it's on it's way out to anyone interested.

pull it towards you. if this does not work take off the rubber but usually you put finger underneath and pull. or catch on side of bobbin winder. hope this helps try oiling it as well. the spring or hing bit.

If you lift up the thread holder, the bobbin holder is inside. Loosen the hand guide to stop the needle from going up and down. Pull the thread around the top thread guide and back into the bobbin holder. Thread the bobbin and move the bobbin over so the guage is "inside" the bobbin. As for the manual, the Singer Merritt 2404 is applicable to the 2430 if that helps.
