What kind of planer? Do you have a model number? Let us know and we can probably sort this out.
SOURCE: I HAVE SHARPENED THE KNIFE BLADES HOW DO I SET
Planer blades can only go in one way, the set plate must go into the groove on the blade. If you sharpened them by hand, or even with a machine, you have to be absolutely sure both blades are EXACTLY identical and that the edges are true and straight. If not you are going to get some real interesting patterns on your wood. It's rarely advisable to sharpen planner blades and they are cheap enough to make it unnecessary.

Hi Rick,
You can go to this webpage and get the pdf document with your operating instructions: http://www.plasplugs.com/acatalog/manuals/4in%20one.pdf
Hope this helps. If it does, I'd appreciate a vote. Thanks,
Handie Andie
Every time you use your knife, the edge will become
slightly less sharp, and you are more likely to injure yourself with a dull
blade than a sharp one, as they can slip while you are working. Make sure you
buy good knife-sharpening steel and use it each time before cutting with your knife
it will also prolong your knife.
