D90 Nikon autofocus problems

I bought my Nikon D90 in Washington at Penn Camera store in february 2009. Now I returned to Suriname (South America) and Auto Focus does not respond or responds not accurately. (not a heat problem, bacause it worked fine till end july 2009)
If I focus manually, i get better pictures, but that is not why I bought the camera for.
The lens is a Tamron 18-270mm and even changing to original nikon kit-lens I still had the problem.
I read many reviews complaining about the focus problem. Most obviously, the switch is set to focus automatically on both camera and lens, so it should have something to do with de camera itself (manufacturer?). Also the settings I double checked on camera.

Does anybody have the same problem and how did you solve it. I can't send the camera back to Washington, costing me a lot and chance of getting lost.
If I can just get some advice, I'll be thankful.

Thanks,

Aniel Gangadin

Try a reset (hold down both buttons with green dots next to them) and see if that helps.

Also try cleaning the contacts on the lens itself (light rub with a pencil eraser usually works well).

Is the Tamron AF08N700 auto focus with the D90?

Good morning. You have likely already gotten an answer to this, but yes, it will.

Unlike less expensive models such as the D40, D60, D3000 and D5000, the D90 has a built in autofocus motor, which means that all Nikon F-mount autofocus-lenses (except two for the rare Nikon F3AF) can be used in autofocus mode for all newer generation autofocus lenses like the Tamron 200-800. However, you may want to look around a bit, as Tamron has come out with a new 150-600 lens that is simply terrific (I know, I own one) and the Big Sig from Sigma is equally great.

FYI

Good luck.

I have a D90 Nikon, I mounted my Nikkor 50mm 1.8d

Make sure you set the aperture ring on the lens to its smallest setting (largest f/number) and lock it. Without doing so, the lens will not communicate properly with the camera and thus you will not get the autofocusing.

Autofocus on Nikon d90 doesn't work well.

Remember, autofocus needs a difference in contrast to lock on to a subject. It's hard to focus on a solid color so move your camera slightly to find something better to focus on.

Hi, I have just bought a Nikon D90 and am

The lens has a plastic mount. Look closely at the rear of the lens, you may see that the tabs that hold it to the camera have broken off. You can get a replacement mount at UScamera.com or Nikon in California

I just bought a tamron di 2 AF 55-200mm f/4-5.6 LD macro for my nikon D40 and i can't get it to autofocus

That 2x is not AF-s compatible. It is the older Af style which the d40 does not support. Your camera store should have known this when they sold it to you, unless you bought it mailorder. Then see if they will let you return or exchange it.

Can't autofocus Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens

The lens has an autofocus motor, but because it is an older model, it will not autofocus for the D40(x), D60, or D5000, which have more stripped down components. I advise you exchange the lens for the newer model, or return the D5000 and get the D90 for just a bit more.

Using vivitar 70-300 lens

Yes and yes. Bear in mind that not all features may work. You probably won't get autofocus or metering with the Nikon D90, for example.
