most likely the problem is the switch places onto the shaft of the valve. to replace the switch, you would need to remove the burner cap and port rings. you will see a large brass nut that needs to be removed on all 4 or 5 burners. next you would need to remove the nut in the center of the simmer port ring which is also the venturi for the main burner. you must be careful when removing this nut as they have a tendancy to lock onto the jet holder and could be hard to remove (don't strip or break the venturi or holder).....after you remove those nuts, the burners and top can be removed (watch the igniter wires). you can remove the switch by removing the retainer clip that holds the switch onto the valvestem.

Hello Liz. The most common reason for the problem you are experiencing is greasey dirt in the burner. Use a small brush, some fine wire and some degreaser to clean up the burner. Then let it dry overnight and try it again. If it still won't start, you will have to replace the ignitor.
