Electric staplers are notoriously unreliable, but the problem you describe sounds like buildup of the adhesive -- a sort of varnish -- used to hold the staples in stick form for loading in the tool. Remove the staples and apply a light coat of 3-in-1 or other thin oil to the first two or three staples. Reload and cycle the tool. This should help you.

This happened to me as well. I am not sure what causes this but heres what I did to fix it.
Just grab the top part of the stapler ( where it says Swingline) and pull up, like you are trying to seperate the top and bottom. You will hear a click and your stapler should work fine.

The Optima 45 is a very touchy stapler. Either you have a staple stuck or the unit is damaged. There is a five year warranty on the stapler so if you have had under five years it will be replaced for free. Here is the contact number. 1-800-541-0094

I couldn't open my Swingline Optima model 8784x either. Their website wasn't helpful except they mention you can change staples "with the push of a button." Button, I thought. What button? In the picture, there's a black button at the back end of the stapler. Mine is missing! The button, if it were there, would press down on a metal tab, releasing the staple slide which pops out the front. Insert staples, push it closed, you're done! I used a letter opener to push down the metal tab.
