Does it use batteries or is it picking up current from the rails and a supply transformer?

Check your left hand frame rail.

On 2005 gasoline engines the fuel filter is integral with the fuel pump/sender assembly in the fuel tank.

The fuel filter is normally located along the frame rail of the vehicle. On some vehicles however, it may have been relocated to the engine compartment. When in doubt, trace a fuel line from the engine backward or from the tank forward in order to locate the filter.
Some vehicles utilize a spin-on fuel filter located on the frame rail. This filter can be turned counterclockwise after the fuel pressure is relieved.

try to scrape the dark residue of with a wooden tool that is long enough to reach the discolored button as long as there is small bit of silver showing the current will get through .

on reservoir tank or a/c drier tank on right side in the engine compartment is a silver tank

My son recently disassembled one with the same symptom. He found one of the small gears in the drivetrain had split -- causing it to bind and limit motion to a inch or so. It's been in the family 25 years, but we elected to junk the locomotive :(

Since batteries and bulbs are new/ok, check for a bad connection. In older version using 4 lantern batteries, open the battery compartment by unscrewing the knob on top of lantern. The lantern bottom comes off once unscrewed (of course you did this to change batteries). There is a "C" clip on the lantern center shaft; remove this by prying with screwdriver or with pliers. Carefully raise the battery contact plate and check slip-on wire connections. Clean as needed (Scotch-Brite works well) and reconnect. Squirt some contact cleaner in exposed switches, work switches back and forth. Inspect circuit board for obvious corrosion or damaged parts (this damage may "total" the lantern). Re-install plate aligning grooves with ribs. Install batteries and test.

You need to have this repaired immediately. It's not too expensive, just an o-ring at the end that goes into the fuel rail. It is very dangerous to have fuel leaking in the engine compartment, don't delay.

A new fuel pump can go bad but you need to know if the fuel rail has pressure or fuel in it the next day. Take something and press on the shradder valve on th fuel rail and see if you have any fuel. If not the fuel pump may be installed wrong.The fuel rail should have some pressure all the time for quick start up. I do not know if this helps but it is a start.

The tender car supplies power from the track to the entire trian.
Make sure the train will run with just the Loco and the tender. Make sure the tender is securely plugged in to the Loco and make sure the the brushes under the wheels on the tender (this is how power gets from the track to the train) are in contact with the track. Finally use a scotch brite pad (DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL) to clean up the track a little.

You can also take a volt meter and measure for DC between the rails. You should have about 10.5VDC on the track. (Inside rail is neg on mine and outside is pos) ...

sorry but there are no hot always wires at the rear of the van.there should be a hot near the battery at a junction connector .
