Hi, If you press the button phone book button - Looks like a book symbol.
Whilst in a call the handset will show "Mute On" press the button again to unmute.

Thank you for contacting the BT Helpdesk.

To turn off the message alert beep: Hold the left-hand <<SKIP button on the main base until the voice says "message alert off"

on some phones the beep refers to a voice mail message that has been left on your answerphone which will be left at the BT server, you can dial 1571 to retrieve the message.
