Power off the television. Wait a few minutes, then power it back on. If this does not correct the issue leave the power on, point your remote control towards the Sony television and hold the down arrow button. While holding the down arrow button press the "Power" button. Release the down arrow button and the Sony TV will reset itself to factory settings. Once the television performs a scan on itself your problem should be gone.

3 flashes of the led light on most KDL series is a power supply malfunction. To confirm the error code, lets access the self diagnostic screen by following the steps below.

Unplug the unit from the outlet for 30 minutes and then plug it back in and check if the symptoms remain the same. Wait until the led light stops from flashing and then press in rapid sequence the "Display", "Channel 5", "Volume (-)", "Power" button key on the remote control. Self diagnostic screen will be display. Let me know the result.

It is giving you a diagnostic result by the # of flashes. count the number of flashes before it pauses and repeats. It could be the lamp as well, however, this unit has some common board failures. post a comment with your results and I can help you further diagnose the problem. If you are "handy" the parts can be found inexpensively online. and it's generally a plug n play swapout. Hope this is a good start...

4 blinks indicated of backlight malfunction. The unit shutsdown to avoid overload to the inverter board.
Check the backlights, busted backlight has a physical indication of fault like blackened end, crack end. You must replaced the busted one and your unit will back to normal operation again.

When tv it shutting itself off by it own does the tv power LED light indication flashes?Tv turn on now,the tv power light indication,just flashes?Yes,than ur tv power supply board is the causes and the problems.That the board,where the power a/c cord plug into it.Tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole refurbish power supply board for the replacement.

Since the TV is still receiving power, the problem is going to be with the TV's mainboard.  After you unplugged the TV and plugged it back in, you said the power light went out again, so I assume the standby light wasn't flashing again?  The flashing standby light is indicating an error code so my suggestion is to contact Sony for service options regardless if there is a warranty or not because service is the only solution to this situation.  Don't forget to provide them the error code or 4 flashes repeating.

There is some confusion on the model (KDL-40W500 vs. KDL-40V2500), so I will direct this toward the 40V2500.

On the KDL-40V2500, an 8X blink means the scan processer has gone bad, and the BU board needs to be replaced. If the problem is intermittent, the the AU board might be the problem, but if it all the time, bank on the BU.

A competent repair shop should be able to help you, or you can try calling Sony directly for assitance.

If the broadcast is in 4:3 (square) then either you can have the black bars on the side, or the TV can stretch the image to fill the screen.
Nothing wrong with your set. The broadcast must be in 16:9 to fil the screen.
