General alarm shows on display yet the machine is clean how do I resolve this?

• If your machine displays a general alarm message or a warning light indicated by a red exclamation mark please carry out the following steps:
  
  • Switch the machine off using the power button on the front of your machine, and wait for the shut down process to complete fully before the next step.
  • Plug the unit off.
  • Open the service door.
  • Remove the drip tray and grounds container.
  • Remove the brewing unit (infuser) by squeezing the two red <a href="http://despreserialero.com/juramantul-episodul-505-506-subtitrat-in-romana/">despre seriale</a>
    buttons either side of the 'Push' button.
  • Pull gently. If the infuser will not freely come out do not force it.
  • Clean the infuser using warm water once removed.
  • With the infuser still out of the machine, clean the inside thoroughly using a vacuum to ensure all grinds are removed. Pay particular attention to the area behind the grounds container.

This machine is frequently turning up here on Fixya with issues. Take it in to you local DeLonghi service centre and tell them to fix it for free.

Check NTC sensor and heating element terminals. You should get resistance with multimeter or ohmmeter. NTC sensor should change resistance when you heat it up with lighter, finger or whatever heat source you have near by.

To clear the alarm:
1) Press and release the "SET button four times. "cnd" will be displayed on the screen.
2) While "cnd" is displayed, press and hold the "SET" button. The display will show the number of weeks the refrigerator has been running.
3) While holding the "SET" button, press and release the ON/OFF button. The number shown on the display will reset to 0.
4) Release the "SET" key.

General alarm means the machine has detected a serious fault. There is a section in the instruction manual that may help. If not, read on.

Persistent "General Alarm"
This means many things. If the transmission is not stuck, check the main boiler has not burnt out (open circuit). This happens when the thermoblock labyrinth runs dry and overheats, a common problem caused by leaks, limescale, milk blockages or water filter contamination. Replacing the boiler is the only fix, a difficult and expensive process, experienced fixers (or nothing to lose) only.

Transmission
If the transmission is getting stuck there may be obstructions, the lead screw may be worn or the limit switches could be faulty. If cleaning and grease on the screw/bearings don't help then replacement is a tricky job only for confident hands. Approach with caution.

From page 21 of the owner's manual: Message: general alarm. Meaning: The inside of the appliance is very dirty. What to do: Clean the inside of the appliance thoroughly, as described in section 15. If the message is still displayed after cleaning, contact a service center.
Hope that all your machine needs is a thorough cleaning; it's not that difficult.

The general alarm message after the machine taking too long to heat up -in deed shows a problem to reach the correct temperature.
So there are a number of possible causes:
the 2 heaters (water/steam) the NTCs(temperature control sensors)
the tempearature overheat-fuses. In my case it was the (water-)heater itself. Be sure to unplug the machine from power supply befor opening!!!
First test then-do the heaters warm up??.....carefull if they do-they are hot!!! If one of them doesn´t warm up- Unplug again!...and then measure the resistance of this heater-If the heater is ok,it should show around 50-58 ohms. If it shows indefinite resistance the heater is broken and you have to exchange it.
In case of both the heaters showing the~50ohms you will have to check the thermal resistors/fuse/NTC.
For me the two forums below wer of great help for me...of course they are in german...but didn´t you wish to learn a foreuage anyway???
