Need temporary fix for a Carrier furnace that won't heat. Ac works, fan works, auto for heat doesn't work often, if at all.

It is an older Carrier with a mercury thermostat, the fan doesn't send heat most of the time, the heat and fan rarely go on auto.. AC is normal. It may turn on auto if it is warm, but it is way below freezing now. Thanks.

It is housed behind an upper wall vent, cannot get to that information, it was already here (not recently installed). It is a small central air type.

SOURCE: Need a quick fix for a Carrier that won't heat. Ac works, fan works, auto for heat doesn't.

Filter has nothing to do with anything.
What you can do is take wire out from thermostat and put W and R together and if heat comes on then thermostat is bad .

Testimonial: "Thanks, appreciate your reply! Thermostat seems to be stuck around 70 degrees but that is not actual temperature, what does that mean? Is there a way to get it working temporarily? Below freezing, need heat! Thanks."

Could be the capacitor or the heating element (or igniter if it's a gas unit). Unless you're a qualified HVAC repairman, call your local HVAC company to come take a look at it.

Fan won't blow on ac, but works on furnace

The fans heat speed is low speed and the cool speed is high speed. High speed is controlled by the fan relay normally open switch, the low speed is controlled by the temperature delay or time delay.

Hi smargyle,

Welcome to fixya!

I can provide you with diagrams for the old Carrier therm and for the new Filtrete therm. But, I would need to know what the model numbers are for each therm plus how many speeds AC you have.

Please reply back with that information and we will get your AC back in working order.

Thanks,
