Please give the actual make and model of the camera, and which lens you are attaching when this happens - could be the camera / lens contacts need cleaning gently.

SOURCE: i've canon power shot SX120 IS, when press on/off

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Will not come on. Took it out of the case and the lens was open so I pushed it back in to close the lens and the batteries are good but still not working.

There is a gear drive that moves the lens, so you may have dislodged the teeth of the gear. There are several things you can try to fix this problem. First of all, make sure the battery is freshly and fully charged. and the camera is off. Remove the memory card, hold the camera (lens pointing down), press the replay or image review button and hold it down then press the Power On button. That does a hard reset on many Nikon cameras. Release the buttons after the camera powers up. Try the lens to see if that fixed it. If it did not, power the camera off, plug the AV cord into the AV jack, hold the camera with the lens down and power the camera on. Having the AV cable plugged in prevents the screen from powering up and gets more power to the lens motor. If this still doesn't fix the stuck lens there are three more things you may try. Hold the camera with the lens down and power off. Press the shutter button down, hold it, and then power up the camera. If there is movement and the lens still doesn't come all the way out, try this a couple more times If there is no success, the next two attempts should be tried knowing they may damage the camera more, but also may fix the problem. If the cost of repairing the camera is close to or exceeds the cost of the camera, these are worth a try. Remove the AV cable, power down the camera. holding the camera by the sides on one end, lens pointing down,
press the power on button and immediate strike the camera into your cupped empty hand fairly hard several times. See if that freed the lens. If not the last try will be the same except this time place a handkerchief folded several times for padding on a table or desk top and strike the free end of the camera on the folded handkerchief fairly hard to try to dislodge the lens. The only other
thing I could suggest you trying as a totally last resort would be to remove the battery and try to gently pry the lens up a little at a time moving the pry tool around the lens a little at a time. If you can raise it to the point you can grasp it, pull it to the extended position and make sure it is straight, rock the lens a tiny bit left to right and see if you hear a click. Sometimes that will reset the pins. Good luck. If none of this helps, you are going to need a new camera.

Sony dscw130 lens wont come out

This seems to happen when something (water, sand, dust) gets trapped in the lens mechanism. Has the camera been somewhere filthy before?

The recommended methods include taping on the bottom of the camera, rapping it on a table, and pressing hard on the lens. If the lens moves when you turn the camera on, try keeping your hand on it so that it's forced back into the camera body. A can of compressed air squirted around the lens is also a possible fix... but be super careful with that stuff, a good hard blow of breath might be safer.

I'm not recommending that you do crazy stuff to your camera, but if you're careful you may be able to get it working again without having to get it serviced.

Hi onikaassing, A very common problem in all the brands "lens error". The remedy is that you have to replace the lens block assembly. Actueally the sled motor start malfunctioning, Contact nikon service centre maybe they have the component level repair facility which can reduce the repair cost. Thanks for using fixya.

Casio Exilim Pro EX-P600 - lens won't retract or come out

Guys - I know this sounds absolutely bizarre but I recently had this problem with my casio exilim ex p600 (with the lens sticking when powering down and not powering back up again) and it worked for me. Pulling my hair out trying anything and everything, I decided to take the SD card out, turn the camera on (at which point hopefully your lens will go back in) then turn the camera off again, Put the SD card back in and hey presto everything ok! Doesn't make any techincal sense (and I'm semi into these things) but the lens sticking\not powering up and happened to me twice now in last few months and that sequence of events is the only thing I could do to solve it! If that doesn't crack it try taking both the SD card and the battery out and doing the same. Good luck...apologies if it doesn't work for any of you guys but it did work for me :o) Let me know how you get on when\if you try it.

Camera DSC-W% is not getting on and lens not retracting

Try turning it on while manually pulling the lens assembly ever so lightly. Also try the same thing pushing it in, if that doesn't work.
Hope that works. Ed

It wont turn on, And the zoom is extended.

I had exactly the same problem. Lens stayed open, when powered on you get three beeps and nothing. I found when I pulled the lens out a little harder it gave a little click. When I powered on it worked perfectly.

Lens opens and then gets stuck

I just had this same problem. The lens came out all the way, but then make a crazy beeping and clunking sound. The LCD would not come on. I took off the casing, and the clunking sound was coming from the mechanism that has gears in it, and seems to be what makes the lens come out. I tried blowing canned air into it, and banged it around, but nothing worked. Then I pulled a little too hard on the lens and accidently pulled the whole lens off. Oops. Looks like a new camera for me. So my solution is: don't pull on the lens.

Camera lens is out, but camera is off

First deconnect all batteries, usb cable anything from the camera. Leave it for about 1 hour and then without connecting batteries press and keep the the power button pressed for about 1min. Then press twice on every other button including the shuter, zoom or stuff like that. This should reset a microcontroller that remembers the last operation done. This doesn't reset the camera. After this, connect the batteries and try to power it again. IF this doesn't work. Try to push the lens back in using your fingers. Don't force them to much if they doesn't appear to go back. Use 2 fingers to press on the lens one on each side aplying equal pressure. You may hear a click noise when the lents start to go back. Again, don't force them to much. Try these at first and then if they doesn't work, please post back and specify what does the camera do. No led's no nothing or ..?
